For the uninitiated, the Legendary Pink Dots could be intimidating. During the band's 22-year career, it has tackled a dizzying array of musical styles. Its listing on the Web site of Soleilmoon Records runs to more than 50 items.
What should a new fan interested in scratching the surface of this quirky, prolific group do?
I probably would recommend they start with something like Canta Mientras Puedas, a CD that strikes a bit of an overview. It's a nice doorway into the world of the Legendary Pink Dots," says band founder-vocalist-keyboardist Edward Ka-Spel during a recent phone interview.
"It takes people just far enough out to go, 'Oh, there are things lurking behind that door, shadowy things.' If they decide to explore further, that's great. I do not expect someone to get into the band and immediately rush out and buy 50 CDs. That's insane."
