Notes

A semi-secret release to mark the Legendary Pink Dots 40th Anniversary. It’s August 2020, so the occasion is official. This trio of pieces is not for those who suffer from the effects of seasickness.

EK- voices, instruments. Amanda Palmer played the waterphone on “Sunshine World”. A big thank you to Amanda, and Imogen Heap, for it was her waterphone! Thanks also to Alexis who helped throughout the sessions.

A limited edition of 99 combination of Permission To Leave The Temple and The Deep, made available for March 2023 Bandcamp Friday.

“When the entire population is given a warning that it’s dangerous to go outside then it’s important to adapt to the new reality as soon as possible. I had no idea when a veneer of normality would be there again back in 2020 when COVID claimed so many. The only way to deal with it was to create as if every day would potentially be the last. “Permission To Leave the Temple “ and “ The Deep” were among the first recordings made during that initial lockdown and it now feels like a good moment to open them up to a wider public, at least temporarily.” -EK

ON THE REBOUND

I looked in the mirror and saw healthy colour in my cheeks. Even the wrinkles seemed to be disappearing although those laugh lines stuck around for a while.
“It gets better,” they all said. And it did until the first problem appeared in the form of a letter from someone called Rosemary.
This Rosemary accused me of cheating her out of her precious possessions and threatened me with a lawyer.
I would have written her off as a lunatic if the handwriting hadn’t seemed so worryingly familiar. Rosemary….Rosemary….the name nagged me as the letters increased in number and ferocity. Then, one day, Rosemary turned up on the doorstep with suitcases, and scowled at me as she stormed upstairs before emptying her things all over my bed.
I just accepted it too. Wordlessly, like a puppy I moved downstairs and did my best to avoid her, though this became harder and harder as time passed.
Sometimes Jake and a rather beautiful young lady named Amber, who was apparently my daughter, would come to visit.
Jake would talk to me about compromise and communication while Amber tended to ignore me at first, preferring to talk to Rosemary upstairs.
The odd thing is that I began to connect to Rosemary after a while. Her anger seemed to subside, and I began to wish for a surprise meeting in the kitchen.

Bandcamp digital release:

An orchestrated short story from the Summer of 2019, released as a hyper-limited vinyl edition on the Des Astres D’or label where each lp was individually pressed. Alas, that edition disappeared in the blink of an eye, but here is the downloadable version.
The images are taken from the covers of the 40 records which were made (every copy is unique).

The 2020 release had the title Live At Szene, Vienna 1987.  The 2023 CD from Klang Galerie used the title Edward Ka-Spel Live in Vienna 1988.  The track list for both are exactly the same.

2020 release:
A big thank you to one of the oldest friends of The Dots, Klaus Totzler, who captured this moody performance from 1987 when EK opened for Skinny Puppy on a European Tour. At this time, a show would conclude with the smashing of a house brick at the front of the stage. Sometimes there would be sparks; at least once the hammer broke. An edgy night for all…

2023 CD release:
Cover design by EK and limited to just 200 copies.

An anarchic live solo performance from EK at the Szene Club in Vienna. He opened for Skinny Puppy and finished the performance with the ritualistic demolition of a brick. The whole show is now available as a very limited CD on the estimable Klanggalerie label…
