Lyrics

THEY’LL COME FOR YOU

They came for the neighbor
They crept through the night
Was over in seconds
He put up no fight
Took his seat, no resistance
We spied through the blinds
Maintaining our distance, as if it was fine
Later that morning you leaned on my fence
And you asked for a teabag
You seemed pretty tense
But we kept off the subject we needed to air
As if our missing friend had never been there

And the street’s looking dead
Did they all move away?
Nothing to see here, it’s such a nice day
Except for the crisis we see on TV
God knows, count your blessings
You live next to me
My precious acquaintance
Keep to yourself
Let’s avoid any questions

Let’s drink to our health

But in the end they’ll come for you

UNCLAIMED MELODY

Song died with the singer
He never left a note
Found him thirteen weeks too late
Was curled up in his coat
The fridge was empty
Meters empty
His precious pets had fled
A crack across a crumbling wall
An inch above his head

Listen hard
Catch that reflection
What hovers in the mist
A melody that needs a nest
A wound that needs a kiss
Slow down, nothing
Nothing is in vain
The singer’s maybe sacrificed
We’ll treasure his refrain

KING FOR A DAY

Buying time and taking space
Too much to confess
The reaper’s in the room now
He wants to take the rest of us
They watched their screens, transfixed
Believed each sacred word he said
The power of an emperor
He can’t get out of bed
He now resents the way God made him
Wants to stand and make his case
Be judge and jury,
Shouting oaths at heaven’s gate
But what if there is nothing?

Nothing more
It’s driving him insane
All for nothing
Slate wiped clean
Can’t let anything remain
A string of numbers muttered slowly
In a solemn tone
Just like in the movie
It all ends on the phone
A string of numbers muttered slowly
In a solemn tone
Just like in the movie
It all ends on the phone

THE TALE OF PRIVATE ZERO

Look, I did not volunteer
I was mobilized
Mobilized
It is as impersonal as it sounds:
A stock letter, a text
An appointment, inspection

Mobilized
As if someone, somewhere
Presses a button or inserts a battery
And the subject moves
Marches, obeys
Just walking the walk and
No goddamn backchat

Part of the machine, and
In times to come
The heroes will be deep frozen
In secret locations
No drain on the economy
Waiting to be triggered into action
Waiting to be
Mobilized

Yeah, that’s me
I was mobilized and
It did not end well

These days
It’s not so much
About the scale of destruction,
But the speed of destruction
It takes a few seconds and
The projectile will hit its target
Before the siren sounds
Through the eye of a needle
And mustn’t stand too close
To the guy who’s doing all the shouting

That was my mistake
And now the war is done and
I’m saluting someone important
With rows of medals from the deck of a ship
I suspect the decorated man
Never set foot on the battlefield
And only saw the inside of a trench in an old movie

In fact, there’s actually nothing left of me
But I was ordered to make an appearance
Even on the other side, here
Mobilized

No judgement day for the rank and file
Just a text, an order
That’s me:
Second row, fifteenth from the left
That hollow grin
Transparent, shock-eyed
One in thousand, yet, a thousand in one

And soon the ceremony will be over
And for that I’m thankful
You see, I was never one to stand still for long

THE COMING STORM

Fate is calling
Softly, oh so softly now
Shepherds warning
Batten all the hatches down
Storm is grooving
Gonna be a monster wave
Crows are circling
Swing the lantern, scare away

Curtain’s falling
We’ll fall down and then we’ll pray
New dawn sleeping
We won’t let it slip away
Don’t lose hope
We made it this far, so we’re told
Takes much more to
Switch the light off in our souls

(You sing)

THURSDAY

Holy Mary, that was great
My tastebuds glimpsed nirvana
Every nerve end found a mate
Wish I could invite you in
And share the trip I’m on
But now it’s been ten seconds
And it’s gone

Next, please
It’s all too brief
I’ve forgotten how to breathe
Next, please
Another kick
I’m beginning to feel sick

Next, please
It’s all too brief
I’ve forgotten how to breathe
Next, please
Another kick
I’m beginning to feel sick

One thrill retreats
The thirst increases
Have to shout for more
I cannot taste the regular
I need that higher score
And if that is the best there is
How will I get to Thursday?

DARK HORSE

Dark Horse sneaks the bronze
Evades the camera
Clocks the winning move
Dark horse cruises past
You blink, you missed him
To another room
Dark horse switched the gender
Burns the phone
Steals first prize
Dark horse swaps the trophy
For a fake
No one spots the lie

Dark horse feels the bits
Those convinced they’ll use him
As their tool
Dark horse takes the money
from the monster –
Who’s the biggest fool?
Dark horse plays him hard
Then leaves him lonely
As they kick the door
Dark horse in the deck chair
Skips the headlines
All about the war

Dark horse serves the wine
A little extra
Long dissolved
Dark horse makes them turn
As he slides sideways
Down that shiny pole
Dark horse steals your darkest secrets
Sells them for a sum
That’s undisclosed
That can’t be traced
Dark horse does it just for fun

THE EDGE OF YOUR SEAT
(instrumental except for “Come Closer”)

QUORN DOG

If at first you stun the beast
Your conscience will be clear
When the final blow is struck
The creature feels no fear
So says the textbook
Read it slow
Grace by another name
Dismiss the inconvenient truth
Your pleasure comes with shame

You tell the kids you love the beasts
Because they could be pets
When one is on the table
You’ll consume it with respect
A little prayer
A thank-you
As you swiftly clear the plate
You’ll move on
Don’t confess
It’s nothing
Nothing

(Backwards lyrics of first verse)
(sample: What’s wrong with you?)
(sample: Death imminent.)

HAPPY LAND

What are you doing?
“I’m hallucinating happy land”
(miscellaneous samples)

CIRCLING A MINOR MOON
(instrumental)
