04/03/05: MARTIJN DE KLEER’S VINTAGE GUITAR FOR SALE:

Former Dot Martijn de Kleer is selling his white 1966 Fender Jazzmaster guitar, which he purchased in New York City on his first LPD tour in 1992.

Since 1992, Martijn has played this guitar on every LPD tour he has been on, every solo album he has recorded and Pink Dots and Tear Garden record he appears on.

We will be selling this guitar via an e-mail auction. Because it is a vintage guitar, the starting bid is USD $2,000 (not including shipping costs). Bids will be taken for one month (through May 3, 2005). At the end of the one-month auction period and upon receipt of payment (including shipping costs), Martijn will ship the guitar to its new owner in its original case. He will include an autographed solo CD and will also autograph the guitar upon request. At the end of the auction period, payment can be submitted online via PayPal. Cash, bank transfer or credit card payment will be accepted.

To place a bid or to request further information, e-mail Martijn at tijnkleer (AT) hotmail (DOT) com and keep watching this space for updates.

GOOD LUCK!

04/22/05: LPD 25th ANNIVERSARY TOUR:

The Legendary Pink Dots will peform at L’Echangeur, Paris on 14th and 15th October. These are the opening dates of the Dots’ 25th Anniversary Tour and there will be a different set on each night with songs that span the band’s entire history. Edward Ka-Spel and The Silverman will also play solo sets at these shows. For more information on the shows at L’Echangeur or to make reservations for the shows, please contact the venue.

It is hoped that the tour will be expand to 100 shows all over the planet. As always, tips for sympathetic venues are always welcome – and greatly appreciated. If you know of an interested venue or promoter, please send me an e-mail or use the contact form on this website.

05/05/05: MARTIJN DE KLEER’S GUITAR – UPDATE:

Martijn de Kleer has found a buyer for his vintage guitar. Thanks so much to everyone who contacted him!

05/25/05: HELP WANTED + TWO CDS EDWARD KA-SPEL WOULD LIKE YOU TO AVOID:

Edward has asked me to get the word out that he’s trying to nail down shows in Scandinavia for the LPDs 25th Anniversary tour and, as always, he could use any tips anyone out there may have for sympathetic promoters or venues in this region. He adds that this time around, it may be necessary for someone in Gothenburg to actually try to approach venues on behalf of the band as clubs in this area don’t typically respond to e-mails.

Any and all help is greatly appreciated. If you can help, please e-mail me.

On a “less savoury note,” Edward has asked that I pass along to friends and fans that for several months, he has been trying to get in touch with Silver Stars, for whom he contributed vocals to a track called “Saturn’s Rings.” Their CD Tripping Louder Attitude and their MCD Saturn’s Rings are both being promoted using Edward’s name as a selling point. In fact, on the main promo page for the releases, the band is even listed as Silver Stars featuring Edward Ka-Spel.

This is particularly offensive as despite several attempts by Edward to get in touch with this band, no one has responded to his e-mails, accounted to him in any way, or even provided him with promotional/complimentary copies of the release, though his name is obviously being used to sell the CDs.

Of course the choice is up to each individual fan, but at the present time, we are asking that people DO NOT BUY THESE RELEASES BY SILVER STAR (from anyone!) until they have accounted to or at least responded to Edward.

Interestingly, it is believed that this project is tied in heavily with the shadowy figure known as “Max from Italy” who was behind the difficult-to-obtain-and-often sought-after LPD release Synesthesia. (I was told by Edward some time ago that eventually, a reissue will surface – perhaps on vinyl).

Unfortunately, no accounting has ever been settled for that release either, though in fairness, a good number of complimentary copies of the Synesthesia album were given to LPDs to sell via mail order and at the merchandise tables when the album was released a few years ago. Regardless, something’s amiss. Feel free to contact us with any questions.

05/30/05: NEW EDWARD KA-SPEL SOLO ALBUM RELEASE AND ART CONTEST:

The next Edward Ka-Spel solo release comes to us via Canada’s Piehead Records. It’s called Fragments of Illumina and has been in the works for quite some time now. All tracks are previously unreleased and total time is approximately 50 minutes.

Tracklist:
1. My Space
2. The End of Everything (Part One)
3. The End of Everything (Part Two)
4. Sticks & Stones
5. Yet Another Fragment

Piehead is having a design contest for the album cover:

Piehead Records is pleased to announce that we will soon be releasingFRAGMENTS OF ILLUMINA, a full-length album of brand new solo material by Edward Ka-Spel.

This album was originally planned to be part of Piehead’s 2004 monthly limited edition CDR series, but we had to bump it from the roster due to some scheduling issues. The album will now be a one-off non-series release, still a limited edition on professionally pressed CDR, but the edition size will be larger than the originally planned 211 copies. The edition size and other details will be announced when the album goes on sale in mid-June.

Note that we are NOT yet accepting pre-orders for this album, so please don’t write asking if you can reserve a copy. I’ll make an announcement here when we are ready to receive orders.

To make this release more special, we have decided to hold a design contest for the album cover. The image that Edward has in mind for the cover is…

“A floating rock in space, with a flag at half-mast.”

Any and all visual representations of this image are welcome. Once you have created an image, please send a small but clear JPEG or GIF of your artwork to kaspel [at] pieheadrecords [dot] com (or post it somewhere and send us a link).

All submissions must be received by JUNE 15TH, 2005. The winner will be contacted as soon as we have reviewed all of the entries and chosen a favourite, at which point they must provide us with a higher quality image file that is suitable for printing.

The winning submission will receive a signed copy of FRAGMENTS OF ILLUMINA, as well as a second unique CDR made for you personally by Edward himself.

Thanks in advance to all contributors, we look forward to seeing your submissions!

06/24/05: FRAGMENTS OF ILLUMINA COVER ART CONTEST – WINNING DESIGN CHOSEN:

This just in from Piehead Records:

The artwork contest for our upcoming Edward Ka-Spel album, Fragments Of Illumina, closed last week, and we had dozens of great entries to choose from. It was tough narrowing it down to just one, but we finally managed to choose a favourite. Congratulations to Garvin Tieseler for his winning submission:

The reduced image above doesn’t really do it justice, so just wait until you see the finished product (not to mention the beautiful back cover and interior & disc graphics that Garvin also designed)!

Piehead expects to be able to start shipping the discs within the next few weeks.

06/26/05: VIDEO LINK: LPDs LIVE AT ATLANTIK CAFE (FEBRUARY 2005):

Courtesy of the Atlantik Cafe and the Letournant video team, you can find a video clip of LPDs February 2005 performance at the Cafe here. Enjoy!

MEN ALBUM: Six years in the making, the release of Jarboe’s highly-ancicipated album The Men, which features Edward Ka-Spel and a plethora of other diverse artists (some of the most talented and respected in the business!) is imminent. I have heard Edward’s contribution (though perhaps not the final mix) and the blending of these two vocal and artistic talents is mesmerizing – well worth the wait!

PRESS RELEASE: THE MEN

Six years in the making, The Men as revealed via twenty tracks on this double CD showcases the impressive range of Jarboe’s artistry. The Men brings together an eclectic global roster of artists from diverse musical backgrounds whose only commonality is Jarboe herself. 16 Oct: Avignon (F) – Le Theatre du Bourg Neuf
07 Nov: Poznan (PL) – TBA

More changes to the schedule will be posted shortly.

Now the good news! There will be two special live CDRs available on the European leg of the tour. The first is a live recording of the Edward Ka-Spel/Silverman show in Basel on September 30, 2005. This was a remarkable show that featured a lot of new material. The CDR includes four tracks from the Silverman (accompanied onstage by Edward), who showcases some of his new tracks along with material from Requiem Settings. Edward also performed new songs.

Toby Dammit opened the show with what Raymond Steeg calls “an incredible set of weird electronics.” He also says “All you people check this out. It’s great stuff!”

The second CDR is a get-it-while-it’s-there limited release of a show in Montepellier, France in 1994. Raymond calls it “one of the great shows from that time featuring Ryan and Martijn. It’s a soundboard recording mixed with two ambience microphones and features great artwork done by Erik Drost with his ancient old computers.”

Niels van Hoorn and Richard van Kruysdijk’s project Strange Attractor will releaseRorschach II in December 2005. This is the obvious successor to the first Strange Attractor LP. Again, it shifts from jazzy ambience to clicky pop songs to post-rock to experimental “whatever” and is always on the edge of contemporary production.

Rorschach II features Edward Ka-Spel, Richard Sinclair and Marie-Caludine Vanvlemen (Sonar Lodge) as guest vocalists. Fans of Robert Wyatt will recognize Sinclair from his performance on Wyatt’s legendary Rock Bottom album.

As an extra bonus, Rorschach II features a Twilight Circus remix of the title track from the first LP!

12/12/05: A MESSAGE FROM THE LEGENDARY PINK DOTS:

We apologise to anyone who turned up the Elk Club on the outskirts of Berne, Switzerland in order to see the Dots last Friday, 9 December. Basically the club had no PA, had made no arrangements for the band to stay anywhere (we were initially offered the floor of the club to sleep on), or even any kind of guarantee for payment, despite a previous agreement. We are still mystified as to just why we were approached to play this show in the first place.

This is only the second show the band has ever cancelled in 25 years due to poor conditions – but never before have we encountered something quite as bad as this.

–LPDs 12.12.2005

12/17/05: WAVE GOTIK TREFFEN FESTIVAL:

The Legendary Pink Dots will be performing at Wave Gotik Treffen in Leipzig in 2006. The exact date of their appearance has not yet been confirmed, so keep checking this page for more information as we have it.

Don’t forget to catch the band in Arnhem on January 14th when they play at Goudvishal. Beequeen will open that show.

01/23/04: LEGENDARY PINK NEWS: BIRTHDAY WISHES AND A NEW ALBUM IN THE WORKS!

Today, The Legendary Pink Dots are taking a break from their busy recording schedule to celebrate Edward Ka-Spel’s birthday! Happy Birthday, Edward!

Fans will be pleased to know that the band is currently recording a brand new studio album, which is expected sometime this spring. We are also in the earliest, earliest, earliest planning stages of the North American tour, which will follow the release of the new album. Keep checking this space for details!

01/30/04: “9 LIVES TO WONDER” 2 X LP UPDATE

Keeping the pace with the buzz already generating since we announced tentative plans for the Pink Dots’ return to North America for an extensive tour this spring, 9 Lives To Wonder, the newest LPD-related offering from Canadian-based labelFlesh Eating Ants, is entering wider distribution. You can now order this release from The Terminal KaleidoscopeSoleilmoonBeta-lactam Ring Records, and of course the Ants themselves.

Label Press Release: When The Legendary Pink Dots first unveiled their euphonious album 9 Lives To Wonder in 1994, few could have foreseen that this journey into the softer side of the band’s psyche would withstand the test of time to become what is one of the best-loved and highly-regarded works in their prolific history.

Like many of their releases from this time period, 9 Lives To Wonder aggressively explores the darker and more melancholy side of the Pink Dots, but it is also renowned for its strikingly romantic undertones and some of vocalist Edward Ka-Spel’s most whimsical lyrics to date.

Though many CD editions of this recording exist, Flesh Eating Ants Records is extremely proud to present 9 Lives To Wonder on vinyl for the very first time. In typical Flesh Eating Ants fashion, nothing has been held back. 9 Lives To Wonderhas been issued as a 220-gram double LP, pressed on magnificently coloured audiophile vinyl, and housed in a stunning full-colour gatefold sleeve featuring the original cover artwork in a much larger magnitude, which showcases the beauty of the original piece. The album also includes an insert with lyrics, and is limited to just 404 hand-numbered copies. Some of the pieces have been slightly re-worked by Edward Ka-Spel, who has carefully layered and optimized the original musical textures and interludes to maximize the listening experience. 9 Lives To Wonderalso includes an entire side’s worth of exclusive bonus material and a new version of a beloved classic.

So sink into soft nether worlds of enthrallingly kaleidoscopic melodies, transcendental ponderings, and wistfully languishing balladry as you absorb the album’s underlying messages of peace, optimism and hope.

02/02/04: SITE UPDATE:

02/04/04: NEW BIG CITY ORCHESTRA MUSIC FEATURING THE SILVERMAN AVAILABLE FOR DOWNLOAD

The new Big City Orchestra release, Trixxy Pixxy, is now available as a free download! Featured musicians include Phil Knight (The Silverman), Daevid Allen (Gong and University of Errors), and the amazing Ninah Pixie. We have just confirmed our show in Minneapolis, MN. Scroll down to see the most current tour schedule.

03/25/04: IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM EDWARD KA-SPEL REGARDING WORLD SERPENT DISTRIBUTION:

It is with regret that the Legendary Pink Dots and Edward Ka-Spel feel that is now necessary to make it public that we have severed all ties with World Serpent Distribution.

World Serpent last accounted to the band over a year ago, and made one partial payment under duress last August. While we appreciate that everybody involved in “independent” music is experiencing difficulties in a financially unstable climate, World Serpent’s failure to answer even the politest question is simply unforgivable.

Plans are already underway for the reissue of Chemical Playschool Volumes 8/9, with the other two titles on the World Serpent roster to follow later this year.

In the meantime we request that distributors, shops and individuals do not buy our titles directly from World Serpent. – Edward Ka-Spel

03/31/04: NORTH AMERICAN TOUR: FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

In an effort to preserve my sanity (and to make sure everyone who e-mails me with the following questions has a proper response), I am posting the answers to the most common questions popping up in my mailbox these days. Please read them carefully. If you have any further questions, please contact Lisa.

Question: I would like to videotape The Pink Dots show in my city. Who should I contact?

Answer: We will not allow video recordings. If you are a television station and would like to film the band, please contact Lisa. Otherwise, please do not bring any video recording equipment to the venue.

Question: I would like to make an audio recording of the concert. Is this okay?

Answer: We have no objections to audience recordings being made from small, unobtrusive hand-held devices. We will not allow you access to the sound board/F.O.H. console. We will not allow you to host your recordings on your personal website or server and we ask that you do not offer them for download on P2P networks such as (but not limited to) soulseek, grokster or kazaa. It goes without saying that placing the recordings on E-bay will not impress us. Private trades between friends, fans and collectors are perfectly fine so as long as no money changes hands. Please do note that if a specific venue has a strict no-recording policy, we cannot and will not intervene if you are asked by venue staff to stop recording or if you are denied access to the venue due to your audio equipment.

All of that said, we do like to offer live tracks for download here at the website. If you are able to get a nice audio recording and will be so kind as to send me a copy, I will greatly appreciate it.

Question: Can I take pictures of the band while they are performing?

Answer: Still photography is permitted. Please try to refrain from using a flash whenever possible as flash photography can be distracting to the band and other members of the audience. As noted above, if a specific venue has a strict no-photography policy, we cannot and will not intervene if you are asked by venue staff to stop taking photographs or if you are denied access to the venue because you have a camera. If you are a journalist and will be photographing the band for an article or review, we do appreciate copies of the photos to use for our own promotional purposes. Full credit will be given to the photographer every time we use a photo. If you are interested in photographing the band for a magazine review, please contact Lisa.

Question: I am under 21, but the show you are playing in my city is 21+. Can you get me in?

Answer: Unfortunately, no. If the venue itself wants to make arrangements for you to attend a show, it is their prerogative and it’s fine with us…but the band, tour manager/merchandiser, and sound engineer cannot intervene on your behalf. We do understand and appreciate that not all of our fans are over the age of 21, but we have no control whatsoever over specific venue age restrictions.

Question: My band wants to open for The Legendary Pink Dots when they play in my city. Who should I contact?

Answer: Please contact Lisa. I forward all of your requests to the individual promoters in each city. It is their prerogative whether or not local bands open for national/international touring acts. If a promoter wishes to put you on the bill with The Legendary Pink Dots, either they or I will be back in touch as soon as possible. EDITED TO ADD: Sending your request directly to our booking agent will only result in our booking agent immediately e-mailing the request right back to me so I can discuss it with the promoters. Therefore, we ask that you do not contact the booking agent directly.

Question: I see you have booked a date at “X” venue in “X” city. I think my club/venue would be a better match for The Pink Dots. Who can I contact to see if you will move the show to my club/venue?

Answer: Thank you for your interest and enthusiasm. We do appreciate your desire to book The Pink Dots. If you are really and truly interested in booking LPD at your venue, however, PLEASE do not wait until we have already started to announce tour dates. Send Lisa a list of your club specs, contact information, sound capabilities, and the names, e-mail addresses and phone numbers for club promoters/club management. I forward all of this information directly to our booking agent so it is readily available to him when he begins routing a tour. You would be amazed at how many people I never, ever hear from again when I ask them for this information!

04/02/04: AN AVALANCHE OF UPDATES:

In these increasingly busy, overly-caffeinated days before we embark on the North American tour, there is so much going on at Chez Dots it has become apparent that I will be updating the NEWS section of this website pretty much every other day for the next month or so. In other words, just try to keep up with us now! Away we go:

TOUR NEWS: The spring tour is about 95% confirmed. Our booking agent is working diligently to nail down the remaining shows as I type. We have just confirmed our dates in Denver, Ft. Lauderdale, and Phoenix. An updated tour schedule appears at the bottom of today’s marathon missive. Note that this will be the first time The Legendary Pink Dots have played only one night in Denver since 1995. It’s an all-ages show, it’s the last night of the tour and it’s one night only, so BRING EVERYBODY!

EDWARD KA-SPEL SOLO ALBUM MP3s: In other exciting news, Edward Ka-Spel’s solo album Pieces of 8 – yes, yes, I know – we all thought it was called Pieces of Infinitytoo, but upon closer inspection of recent e-mails from Edward, both Beta-lactam Ring and I slapped our respective foreheads and withdrew our previous enthusiastic announcements. Anyway, it is indeed called Pieces of 8 though to be fair, the “8” really is laying on its side and looks just like an infinity symbol! Ah well…the important thing here is that we have MP3 samples from each and every track on the CD. To hear them, simply head to the Downloads page and click the links. BLRR strongly encourages people to pre-order this release from their website as the buzz is already spreading and copies are going fast! You don’t want to miss out, do you?

NEW LEGENDARY PINK DOTS ALBUM: I am absolutely thrilled by the gorgeous cover art for the new LPD album, which really is called The Whispering WallROIR sent it over a few days ago, so here it is for all to see:

For those plucky souls who can handle even more excitement, here is the tracklist (though the order may be re-arranged prior to the album’s release, sayeth ROIR) to wet your whistles. We promise to get you some little soundbites as soon as we can!

It’s All In The Past Now

EDWARD KA-SPEL SOLO TRACK ON NEW BLRR SAMPLER: Beta-lactam Ring is issuing a new sampler in its popular Beta Beat series. Wistfully titled Death’s Last Life’s Breath, this one features an excerpt from the brand-new Edward Ka-Spel solo track Comedown and an exclusive Nurse With Wound piece called A Wasted Life Of Phogocyte Foot Fetishism. The sampler is available from BLRR and we should have copies of it for you at our merch booth as well. I know you’re dying to see it, so here’s the cover art:

TOUR FAQs: If you haven’t already done so, please take a few moments to read through the FAQs pertaining to the North American tour. I would really appreciate it.

STREET-LEVEL PROMOTIONS: Those of you who want to know how you can help promote the upcoming tour, please keep checking this space. As soon as my head stops spinning from this whirlwind of updating, I will be uploading a little page I built for the website where you will be able to download and print out fliers and find the information you are so desperately seeking! NORTH AMERICAN TOUR FAQs EDITED TO ADD THE FOLLOWING:

Question: My band wants to open for The Legendary Pink Dots when they play in my city. Who should I contact?

Answer: Please contact Lisa. I forward all of your requests to the individual promoters in each city. It is their prerogative whether or not local bands open for national/international touring acts. If a promoter wishes to put you on the bill with The Legendary Pink Dots, either they or I will be back in touch as soon as possible.

EDITED TO ADD: Sending your request directly to our booking agent will only result in our booking agent immediately e-mailing the request right back to me so I can discuss it with the promoters. Therefore, we ask that you do not contact our booking agent directly.

FURTHER EDITED TO ADD: Please do not send multiple e-mail requests to me. I have already stated if a promoter is interested in putting you on the bill, someone will be in touch with you as soon as possible. By sending multiple requests, you will only succeed in slowing me down further and making it that much more difficult for me to find your message in the ocean of e-mail churning away in my mailbox. I do appreciate your enthusiasm and The Pink Dots appreciate it too, but please keep in mind that multiple posts are completely counter-productive for the reasons stated above.

So – until soon…off we go!

06/12/04: ATLANTA

The Atlanta show at Echo Lounge was cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances outside of everybody’s control. Both the band and the Echo Lounge want to extend their apologies to everybody who came out for the show but were unfortunately turned away. LPD want to especially thank everybody who stuck around and bought merch from the group on the street. At this point, if there are still people who are in need of a refund, they need to conact the Echo Lounge at 404-681-3600. LPD are doing well and are sad they didn’t get to play, Atlanta’s always been a supportive town and LPD will definitely return there next tour.

The Legendary Pink Dots are preparing for their European tour which is slated to begin on October 13 at the Underground in Cologne. The Pink Dots also hope to play their first-ever shows in Finland, Latvia, Greece, Slovania and Estonia this year.

Edward has asked that fans with tips for clubs in the south of France or Slovania contact the band with information. You can use the contact form at this site or send an e-mail to me.

Also, the vinyl release of ROIR‘s All The King’s Men is imminent (release date is August 24). You can view the one-sheet here.

08/20/04: THE BRAINWASHED EYE VOLUME 834

We are pleased to announce that the Brainwashed Eye: Volume 834 is now available for sale through Brainwashed Commerce.

Arranged and filmed by Jon WhitneyThe Eye: Volume 834 includes interviews and concert footage from Edward Ka-Spel’s solo show (September 2003) and The Legendary Pink Dots concert (June 2004) at The Middle East in Boston, MA.

IMPORTANT: These will only be available directly from Brainwashed and not from the band or TEKA or any other retailer. They come personalized (yes, your name is written on it) since nobody wants these floating around on ebay…

To see part of the videos, you can go here. Both videos have been slightly updated/modified to include footage not featured in the online versions.

This volume is being sold for $15 (before shipping) and is only available here.

08/26/04: NEW LPD AND EKS VINYL RELEASES

The 2 X LP version of All The King’s Men has been released by ROIR. Though there is no bonus material on this album, it will still make a spiffy addition to your LPD collection. The cover art is exactly the same as the CD release, only “bigger and more beautiful.” Though the album may not be listed on the ROIR website just yet, rest assured it is indeed available for purchase.

Beta-lactam Ring tells me that the 2 X LP version of Edward’s Pieces of 8 will start shipping on or around September 1. The LP features a bonus track called Wall of Fire as well as a poster and a signed and numbered insert. This release is limited to 333 copies.

10/04/04: STRANGE ATTRACTOR: NEW NIELS VAN HOORN / SONAR LODGE PROJECT TO BE RELEASED NOVEMBER 18:

Niels Van Hoorn and Richard van Kruysdijk (of Sonar Lodge) are pleased to announce their first release under the name Strange Attractor. Entitled Rorschach, the album will be officially released November 18 on the Music for Speakerslabel. Legendary Pink Dots fans will be able to purchase the album at the merchandise stand on the European tour prior to the release date.

From the label press release: “Out of a warm, acoustic jazz atmosphere springs forth a cold, sequenced synth pattern. ÔFull throttleÕ acoustic drums and harsh double sax frenzy turns into minimal glitches. Hip-hop style raw beats are underlined with eerie, floating acousmatic soundscapes. Touching the edges of jazz, ambient and electronica, Strange Attractor’s debut LP is a high-spirited exercise in associative music-making. Rorschach gives insight in how tracks evolve through different approaches of sound, while retaining a constant emotional depth and consistent, intense undercurrent. Although often placed in a moody, melancholic musical setting, it is the result of a joyful, inspired collaboration between Niels van Hoorn (The Legendary Pink Dots) and M4S resident Richard van Kruysdijk (Sonar Lodge). Guest appearances by vocalists Edward Ka-Spel (The Legendary Pink Dots) and Marie-Claudine Vanvlemen (Sonar Lodge) add even more colour to the rich sound palette of this vinyl-only release.”

You can listen to the album in RealAudio here and you can view the entire .pdf press release here.

NEW BIG CITY ORCHESTRA FEATURING THE SILVERMAN NOW AVAILABLE:

Appx. date: March 1, 2003

Word came from BCO camp (or tent…or cardboard box…) this morning that their latest venture “Moisture” is now available.

According to BCO: “Moisture” is based on our 2001 trip to Europe. While Rob and Russ helped record the base tracks, the recordings here come from live recordings at the Zack Club in Bremen and Radio 100. in Amsterdam (the night of Sept 11th.) The remaining bits were taken from Phil (The Silverman), Nina and Das playing in our camper on the river banks in Nijmegen. The obligitory sound effects (tracks 8-27) consist of the channel ferry, a tesco in Northampton, and under a bridge in Nijmegen.”

You can listen to an MP3 sample and purchase “Moisture” here.

WEBSITE CONSOLIDATION:

Appx. date: May 21, 2003

From your webmistress:

After many, many months of maintaining both legendarypinkdots.org and brainwashed.com/lpd, a decision has been made by me (Lisa), Edward, all at Chez Dots & Jon Whitney to consolidate these two websites. Pointing your browser to www.legendarypinkdots.org will now bring you directly to LPD Online Centraal.

All lpd.org photo galleries and the monthly MP3 downloads have already been restored here at brainwashed. You’ll find them on the menu bar to the left of this text.

Next, we’ll be revising and revamping the Dotsography to incorporate all those album cover images you’ve been missing for such a long time, MP3 samples of various songs, and the Cloud-Zero lyric archive. Many big changes are ahead as we renovate this website…so stay tuned!

5/22/03: DREAM CELL 2 x LP PRESS RELEASE:

The press release for “Dream Cell” came through my in-box this morning. More details will be posted here as they emerge from Chez Dots.

THERE IS MORE TO HEAVEN AND EARTH…

The Day was long, the Night was cold,
And your dreams just went up in smoke.
What “Answer?”
Wake up and come inside,
To Dream you must not Sleep.
Wake up, come inside,
The Dream Cell is your only hope.
Wake Up!
And ask your Question.

“Dream Cell” is the very first solo excursion by Philip Knight (aka Silverman), keyboardist and founding member of The Legendary Pink Dots. Recorded between Summer 1992 and Autumn 1994 in Nijmegen, the Netherlands, “Dream Cell” was first released on CD in 1995 by The Terminal Kaleidoscope. Eight years later we bring you this exquisite vinyl edition, complete with a bouquet of vibrant bonus tracks and the original cover art returned to its full glory.

7/17/03: NEED CONTACTS IN OSLO & GOTHENBURG

Unfortunately, The Legendary Pink Dots have had to cancel their plans for a small tour of Scandinavia in early September as there were no prospects for shows in Oslo or Gothenburg. The Dots are trying to make new arrangements (possibly for shows in November), but unless they can find an interested venue in Gothenburg or Oslo, it is unlikely that they will be able to schedule any dates in Scandinavia in the near future.

If anyone out there has specific contact information or ideas for Oslo or Gothenburg, please contact me as soon as possible…or go here and choose “Live Shows/Booking” from the drop-down menu.

7/27/03: AUDIO AND VIDEO REQUESTS

The requests to make soundboard and video recordings of Edward Ka-Spel’s solo performances this fall have already started pouring in! I thought it might be best to put up an official announcement regarding audience recordings along this tour to save everyone a lot of time:

ABSOLUTELY NO SOUNDBOARD OR VIDEO RECORDINGS WILL BE PERMITTED ON EDWARD’S SOLO TOUR.

Snapshots are fine but please, no flash photography.

Edward has no problem with audience sound recordings being made from small, unobtrusive devices (please…no 10-foot high mic stands propped up in the middle of the crowd!) so long as the results are not offered up for sale at a later date.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Lisa. We thank you for your understanding and look forward to seeing you on the tour!

Remember that The Dotsography is a constant work in progress. I will be making minor changes and additions to the new files over the next couple of weeks. Thanks to Jon Whitney for all his help and guidance with the new files!

NEW MP3: There is a new MP3 online at the Downloads page. It’s a great version of “Window On The World” and it was recorded in Denver, CO on November 9, 2002. Enjoy!

TANITH AND THE LION TREE 2 x LP NOW AVAILABLE:

appx. date: April 1, 2002

Over a decade after its initial CD release, Flesh Eating Ants Records is proud to present Edward Ka-Spel’s classic “Tanith and the Lion Tree” in the format it was always intended: on ultra-thick vinyl. “Tanith and the Lion Tree” has been repackaged as a double LP set on grey-coloured, 220 gram audiophile quality vinyl. Edward has also provided 3 brand new bonus tracks to complete the second LP. For those of you who may not know, the original planned vinyl release would have seen the final two tracks omitted to allow the piece to sit as a single LP, however the bonus material fits so well with the tracks (“Phoney War” and “Old Man Trouble”) that a double LP was entirely necessary. The complete work has been remastered by Edward to better fit the medium, and a few changes have been made. The release is limited to 512 hand-numbered copies, and the item is now in stock and has been shipped out to those who have pre-ordered.

ELECTRICALLY INDUCED VIBRATIONS:

appx. date: May 1, 2002

Edward Ka-Spel and The Silverman are featured on the new “Electrically Induced Vibrations” compilation which will be released in August 2002 by Anomalous Records. Edward’s song is entitled “Burdon” and the new Silverman piece is called “Cartilage Music”. Both tracks are exclusive to this release. The LP itself is on multi-coloured vinyl and is limited to 414 copies. 100 of these copies will be given to contributors and a large number of pre-orders have already been placed, so act VERY quickly!

UPCOMING RELEASES FROM BETA-LACTAM RING RECORDS:

appx. date: May 15, 2002

Many new Pink Dot related releases are in the pipeline at Beta-Lactam Ring Records. First up is “So Close Yet So Far Out”, the latest solo offering from the ultra-talented Martijn de Kleer. This will be a double LP pressed on 220 gram vinyl via direct metal mastering. Packaged with various inserts, the first 250 copies will also include postcards autographed by Martijn. The music itself ranges from pure psychedelia to melodic abstract collages. Martijn is joined on this LP by cEvin Key, The Silverman and Ryan Moore. Expect this release sometime in October, but for now you can listen to a short MP3.

Also due in October is the CD edition of “O’er A Shalabast’r Tyde Strolt Ay”, Edward’s most recent musical masterpiece. The CD edition will be slightly re-mixed and will include bonus material.

Last but not least are two new Legendary Pink Dot CDRs, which will be packed with professionally printed inserts and burned onto white washed discs. More details are coming soon, so stay tuned.

ALL THE KING’S HORSES & ALL THE KING’S MEN:

appx. date: June 1, 2002

The first details of the two new LPD studio albums, due this fall, are starting to emerge from Chez Dots. “All The King’s Horses” is actually finished and will be released by Soleilmoon, while “All The King’s Men” (to be released by ROIR) is awaiting the final mix.

Word from Edward is that these albums are more “song based” than the last few releases, with the exception of the 25-minute opus “All The King’s Men”/ “The Brightest Star” which concludes the ROIR CD.

EYE SPY WITH MY LITTLE EYE:

appx. date: July 1, 2002

Edward is hard at work on the forthcoming Tear Garden release, entitled “Eye Spy With My Little Eye”. This CD is part of the Subconcious Communications “From The Vault” series. The cover art (courtesy of Litany) can be seen here. All tracks will be exclusive to this release.

The new Niels Van Hoorn CD is also available through Soleilmoon. According to the label press release: In the middle of 2001, Niels Van Hoorn (Legendary Pink Dots) received a friendly e-mail from Ryan Moore (Twilight Circus Dub Sound System / Legendary Pink Dots) offering assistance with his new solo album. He promised “no stress, just fun!” And that is exactly what happened. Moore ended up playing drums and congas, which were looped and later employed for multi-track recordings. Van Hoorn’s experiments with a Boomerang Phrase sampler resulted in the first sax loop on the album, which were mixed live with effects to a 2-track tape. For the most part, Van Hoorn placed himself in the middle of his studio, encircled by his collection of saxes, clarinets, flutes, analogue windsynths and keyboards, and would walk around to each, improvising. Everything was then recorded by Moore and passed through his “effects kitchen” for some sonic baking. And voila! “Colours” came into being. Both Niels and Ryan hope you enjoy listening to it as much as they enjoyed producing it.

“EYE SPY WITH MY LITTLE EYE” UPDATE:

appx. date: November 15, 2002

Scott at Litany passed on the following information regarding the new Tear Garden CD:

“Some of the tracks were recorded in the 80’s and sound “lo-fi” at times. The songs are time-sequential-ish and start with demos from 1986 and work up to a new track (entitled “Changer”) which was recorded just for this release. Everything is pretty close to being finalized and “Eye Spy With My Little Eye” should hit the presses relatively soon.”

If you still need to pre-order a copy, you can do it here.

January 28: Paris, France/La Locomotive (Festival)
March 14: Vicenza, Italy

BETA-LACTAM RING PRINTS AND ARTWORK FOR SALE:

appx. date: December 10, 2002

Beta-lactam Ring Records is now offering prints of the cover art from Edward Ka-Spel’s “O’er A Shalabast’r Tyde Strolt Ay”, Martijn de Kleer’s “So Close Yet So Far Out.” Prints are available in very limited quantities and can be purchased here.

MARTIJN DE KLEER: “SO CLOSE YET SO FAR OUT”:

appx. date: December 15, 2002

Beta-lactam Ring Records is now accepting orders for Martijn’s new 2 X LP.

From the label press release:

” All the I’s are microdotted and all the mushroom teas crossed as Martijn’s guitar gently seeps, crawls, oozes, boils and burns. And even though Martijn’s Dotted past is in some evidence, this is hardly an LPD karaoke album. This is a fully fleshed-out beast of original design. Martijn’s vocals occasionally punctuate the parade, but the majority involves instrumental clusters, some based in rock form and others more like giant swelling clouds, all thick with psychedelia (acid rain?). Besides the requisite fuzzing guitar (see also Damon and/or Helios Creed), Martijn employs such merry men as Ryan Moore and cEvin Key. A beautiful production that is filled with sonic surprises at every turn and is sure to make any day trip, erm, trippier. 8 tracks over 2 albums, exactly the way any good psych record is supposed to be, damnit! The finale is a particularly rewarding climb to Heaven on a honeyed ladder, from which view is all poppies, beautiful poppies, and the sound is perfectly Kleer. 2-220 gram audiophile vinyl lps, packed in a full color gatefold sleeve.”

LETTER TO LPD FANS FROM BENNY (ORIGAMI GALAKTIKA):

appx. date: December 25, 2002

On Christmas Day, I received the following e-mail from Benny of Origami Galaktika. He asked me if I would put it online in the usual places so that he could thank everyone for the kindness they showed him when he opened for the Legendary Pink Dots on their North American tour. So without further ado…here it is:

Hello everybody!

I hope you’re all doing well and that the Great Lord and/or the High Spirits (whichever you prefer) look upon you with grace and that you will all be granted good lives.

I would like to use this as an opportunity to express my gratefulness and appreciation to the following people:

First of all to The Dots and their collaborators for inviting me along on this, my first journey to the US of A, and by doing this giving me the chance to see and meet all you people.

When Edward first asked me (in Oslo, summer 2001) I immediately replied “Yes I’d love to, if it turns out to be possible, and if I’m granted the right to enter the country”…(it’s hard to tell right?!) of a year went by and then I got a mail asking if I was still into it and the ball started rolling…

Luckily, it turned out I was allowed to enter by the authorities that seem to believe they’re in charge…

Then second, to everybody that I will not mention by name, you know who you are!!!!

Then third but no less important, to all you people that were there for treating me so nice and being mostly open-minded to what Origami represents and what I represent within the Origami Republika. It’s about love, it’s about freedom, it’s about life.

Also to the one guy in New Orleans that was shouting so loud during my gig that I was almost scared and to the crowd in Orlando where most people seemed to have way more important things to do than pay attention to this tall, weird guy with the braided beard, making all these slow and drony sounds.

And I must not forget the guy in St. Petersburg that went to the wrong gig. I guess Lynyrd Skynyrd were playing somewhere else and you, my dear friend, didn’t notice that it wasn’t where you bought a ticket to enter. But I’m not angry, (I’ve heard that hillbilly life isn’t always easy and you had probably had a hard day throwing rocks at your neighbours) I’m sorry that I could not play “Freebird in Chains” for you.

Maybe next time…

Those of you that I have promised to write will hear from me sooner or later and those of you that would like to get in touch, my e-mail is galaktika@hotmail.com.

But please remember to write “Pink Dots” or something I will understand in the subject line, ok!? It is hotmail and as those of you that have hotmail know I do get a lot of shit there…

I could go on but my point is just to say thank you all, hope to see you again!!!!

All the best to all of you, take care, make a difference.

Sing while you may and treat your neighbours nice.

Love + light,

Benny

NEWSLETTER 5

The question is, what the hell am I going to do with the 350 cans of peas I stockpiled for the apocalypse? It was a cosy retreat out there on the Ombahba Islands, at least 3 kilometres under the ground…plenty of candles, a few thousand boxes of matches, vegetarian cup-a-soup (3 cartons),… I won´t go on. Didn´t bother with a TV because I was counting on hearing the ceiling rumble a little when the 4 horsemen thundered across the planet on January 1st. When the rumbling stopped I figured it was safe to come out again.
The reason why I am writing this now is that I forgot my can-opener, and when I emerged to make a swift dash to the local Ombahba Supermarket to buy one I noticed it was January the 8th and everything was still there. It has occurred to me, however, that I may have inadvertently slipped into another dimension where everything simply looks the same. Nevertheless my behavioural patterns will remain the same. So happy new millenium, folks… welcome to the Legendary Pink Dots’ latest newsletter.

On a more serious note, everyone here was shocked and saddened to hear about the death of our old friend Tomasz Beksinski in Warsaw on Christmas Eve. Tomasz was a DJ with Radio 3 in Poland and introduced our music to the whole country many years ago. We met him for the first time early in the 90s in Wroclaw, liked him enormously and the friendship grew each time we returned. Tomasz.. wherever you are now… may you have found the peace you deserve.

THE YEAR 2000….PLANS,DELUSIONS etc.

Legendary Pink Dots have resumed recording their latest album. Release date is scheduled for March/April and a long North American tour is planned for end May/June. A taster for the album will be made available here at the Dots website at the end of February thanks to the miracle of the MP3.
Before this album is available, a new TEAR GARDEN CD should be in the shops entitled “Crystal Mass.” Tear Garden´s first tour looks set to occur in the Fall in North America. Also imminent is MIMIR 3 on Streamline/Anomalous Records.
Legendary Pink Dots are planning only a few shows in Europe this year, though dates listed below are confirmed. We have just received an invitation to play in Greece (possibly end -April) and want to do this.. but no promises as our previous attempts to play there ended in disappointment. Israel, Russia, Mexico and The Baltic States remain possibilities for this year as well.
A new album by Edward Ka-Spel is planned for release in February entitled “Red Letters”, while “The Scriptures of Illumina” along with other long unavailable Terminal Kaleidoscope titles will be reissued by Soleilmoon. This doesn´t mean the end of the TEKA label… it simply isn´t feasible for re-presses without any distribution in Europe.
All Play it Again Sam titles will re-emerge via Soleilmoon this year, while the last of LPDs cassettes on CD series is slated for the Spring (“Stained Glass Volume 2”- APPARITION/ATOMIC ROSES/BASLISK. A double). Also likely is the appearance of “Under triple Moons” on vinyl.
LPDs were sad to see Edwin Von Trippenhof leave the band at the start of December for personal reasons. We wish him all the best, and would like to point out that he is also making some fine music as a solo artist. If he wants to release it, look for it here.
Martijn de Kleer has rejoined the Pink Dots on guitar and occasional violin.

LPD 2000
Year 2000 marks 20 years that LPD has been playing and recording together as such. There’s now a brand new miniature biography authored by EKS where the history page is.

RECENT RELEASES

  • DNA LE DRAW D-KEE – Reissue on CD of very obscure vinyl release project of Edward Ka-Spel, Elke P., Ryan Moore.
  • Sing While You May – Russian compilation CD in Cyrillic fonts. 2 new tracks, one new version of Supper at J’s, domestic USA price from Soleilmoon…
  • LEGENDARY PINK DOTS Live at the metro (35 DFL/20 $ US/ 17 goddamn Euros).
First full-length live CD from the Dots. A good audience recording of our show in Chicago last November (thanks to Nick who provided the CDRs for us). Original plan was to issue multi-tracked recording from Poznan a couple of years ago…but the fire and spirit of this performance in Chicago simply came across much stronger even if it isn’t quite so hi-fi. Parts of the Poznan show (3 tracks) will eventually emerge …possibly as a mini-CD.
This “Live at Metro” CD is a Polish import, features many photographs and includes CD-rom material of a rather silly interview.
  • EDWARD KA-SPEL, “Share the Day/Dream Stealer” (15 DFL/8 $ US)
2 new tracks on a 7″ vinyl single released by long term LPD friend jon Whitney of the excellent Brainwashed website (www.brainwashed.com).

NEWSLETTER 6
Spring. The new millenium. The battered Winter fields transforming into a riot of colour.
Ah, glorious isn’t it? Can see a beam from the almost forgotten sun reflecting on the roof of a Mercedes as it speeds down the highway which runs past this window. Happy demolition workers roll up their sleeves as the big metal ball smashes into what’s left of a farmhouse across the road. Happy workers part the curtains in the automatic door factory which backs onto the demolition site.
Spring….

THE YEAR 2000…. PLANS,DELUSIONS etc.
Legendary Pink Dots are pleased to announce that the new album ,”A Perfect Mystery” is completed, and we’re quite pleased with ourselves this time around. It feels like an especially good one to all who made it. Look out for it perhaps sometime in April.

Mimir 3 and Edward Ka-Spel’s new solo album, “Red Letters” are out now, but new Tear Garden (“Crystal Mass”) is now slated for Summer release.

LPDs’ USA/Canada tour with Dead Voices on Air is in advanced planning stage now and first date should be in Toronto on May 24. There are still plans to visit Greece. A special CD will become available at shows on the USA tour, reaching the shops when it has finished.

Tear Garden may play a handful of shows in Europe in September, with a USA tour tentatively planned for November.

STAALPLAAT/OPEN CIRCUIT
Staalplaat have embarked on a project offering bands and artists who have not yet had anything commercially released,or have gained no serious exposure,a real chance to have their music heard. Anyone supplying them with a finished ,coded CDR and artwork can have this work manufactured (as CDRs) and distributed to their regular outlets as well as advertised in their catalogues. For further information contact Staalplaat via www.staalplaat.com and click on the “news” item. The project/distribution outlet is known as Open Circuit.

A WORD OF ADVICE FOR NEW BANDS
In the jubilation of creating a new CD and receiving a contract from a record company, mistakes can sometimes be made.
Chances are, a representative of the record company will wave a SECOND contract under your nose stating how the label’s publishing wing wants to publish your songs. Chances are, this contract will be in an obscure branch of English known as “legalese”. Should you ask a question about it, you will be assured that it’s “just standard industry practice” for a label’s publishing wing to publish the songs of its sister company.
Chances are, there will be an innocuous sentence telling you that the contract is valid for the “period of the copyright”.
Don’t sign it! We did to find out that Play it Again Sam’s publishing wing (SC Confidence) apparently has us under contract until 70 years after our deaths. We are making trouble about this.
Standard industry practice….

RELEASE DATES
Soleilmoon has announced the release dates for the next few items:

  • Out now – Edward Ka-Spel “Red Letters” CD (Caciocavallo CAD 2)
  • April 18, 2000 – Dark Star “Travelogue II” CD (Soleilmoon SOL 102 CD) [not sure if the Dots are involved with this one or not]
Edward Ka-Spel “Scriptures of Illumina” (Cacciocavallo CAD 8)
  • May 23, 2000 – Legendary Pink Dots “A Perfect Mystery” CD (Cacciocavallo CAD 11/CAL 11)
double LP will follow shortly thereafter

OLDER BITS OF INTEREST

SUMMER 2000
Here is the latest Legendary Pink newsletter for the curious, and the first to appear after our USA tour, which may have been the most enjoyable adventure we’ve had on the highway. Many thanks to all those who turned up and made us feel so welcome.

Alas the two European festivals planned in Dresden and Trutnov are going ahead without LPDs, but the band is planning shows in Europe in the near future, so suggestions would be welcome. Also all apologies for the new LPD album, “A Perfect Mystery” not being available yet in Europe. Thank you for your patience.

CRYSTAL MESS

The brand new Tear Garden CD, “Crystal Mass” has been released by Nettwerk in North America. The track listing, however is rather mismatched to the track numbers on the CD. While we here at brainwashed are still awaiting confirmation on the music, we can say with 100% certainty that track one is “Lament” while two different songs share track four. Those songs which share track four and the rest of the CD have been debated upon.

EXIT RYAN MOORE

Ryan Moore has left the Legendary Pink Dots. A message from Ryan can be found here.

“After nearly 10 years of intensive recording & touring activity, I have left the Pink Dots. The reason is that I really feel the need at this time to move on to new experiences & challenges in life and music. I’m pleased with the significant body of recorded and live work we accomplished over the past 10 years & I can think back on some great moments which were had in the studio, onstage, travelling on some distant highway / sonic tangent etc – none of which would’ve been possible without the support of YOU, the fans of the Pink Dots. All in all, it has been a life enriching experience.

My departure shouldn’t have an effect, other than the lineup change, on upcoming LPD european tour plans & you can bet, in one form or another, the Pink Dots will continue to keep making their unique music for some time to come.

For anyone who is interested, you can check on my upcoming projects as they arise, most likely at: www.twilightcircus.com

kind regards

ryan moore
So, thank you!”

CHEMICAL PLAYSCHOOL 11,12 and 13.A 3 x CD box set.A statement of intent, and hopefully the release that will quell rather unreasonable fears that the Dots are considering dropping into a lower gear or calling it a day.Music and artwork is finished but release will probably not occur until after the summer.

Reissues of all titles from the back catalogue from “The Lovers” through to “Malachai” by Soleilmoon in USA and SPV in Poland. Artwork for Polish editions is unique and very special with Polish translations of the lyrics. Alas, we still have no distribution in Western Europe but a series of compilations is planned by a small Italian label focussing the releases which are hard to find in this part of the World.

A European tour., beginning at Sittard (Fenix) in Holland on April 13.

Said label will also release “All the King’s Men”, one of two upcoming LPD studio albums. The other will be called “All the King’s Horses” and will be released through Soleilmoon. There’s no date yet for CP15, and the two studio albums will be out this fall, “…at the very earliest.”.

THE TERMINAL KALEIDOSCOPE:

appx. date: August 1, 2001

ONLINE UPDATE – AUGUST 17, 2001

LPD/EKS CONTRIBUTES TO NEW CEVIN KEY SOLO ALBUM

Cevin Key’s new album is called “The Ghost of Each Room”. Edward Ka-Spel sings on one track, and other dots can be heard performing as well. Visit Metropolis records for more info.

MORE RE-ISSUES

The Maria Dimension, Shadow Weaver, The Golden Age and Any Day Now have now been re-released by SPV Poland. All CDs have new artwork, which bears no resemblence to the original covers. Curious? More info here.

EXCLUSIVE LPD TRACK ON BENEFIT CD

A new compilation CD from moving on music features an exclusive Pink Dots track entitled “Out There Pt 2”. It’s available now from TEKA mailorder (38 Dutch guilders/20 US $). For more info visit moving on music’s website.

LOVE AND LOUD COLOURS – UPDATE

Production is still underway for an illustrated book of lyrics by Edward Ka-Spel, which will also include a CD-single featuring an exclusive four-part EK creation. The collection will be available mostly through mail order, but, if supplies last, copies will be available at select Legendary Pink Dot appearances following publication.

Production update: the music and corrected lyrics arrived from Holland in the spring of 2001. As such, we’d like to set a new (and hopefully final) publication date of 23 January 2002 (with heartfelt apologies to the anticipant and ever-patient). Advance reservations (without payment yet) are being accepted now for the first 834 copies, which will be numbered and beribboned. For more information, go to the website at its new address: www.loveandloudcolours.com.

ONLINE UPDATE – NOVEMBER 7, 2001

“CASTE o’ GRAYE SKREEENS”

New brand new Edward Ka-spel solo album album entitled “Caste o’ Graye Skreeens” has now been released by TEKA / World Serpent. (the record is not yet on the World Serpent website, but it’s been confirmed that they have it in stock). The album consists of two tracks, one of them split into “11 or 12” sections. The CD is a digipak, “My first” says a proud Edward.

SINCE THE LAST UPDATE….

Beta Latcam Ring Recordings have released “A Perfect Mystery” on vinyl, and the russian Teargarden compilation “For Those Who Walk With the Gods” has seen the light of day. Soleilmoon has also re-released the classic Legendary Pink Dots album “Island of Jewels” from 1986.

THE DOTS AND THE CURRENT SITUATION

“To put it mildly, it has been a traumatic year so far. Unexpected and unwelcomed changes in the Dots’ line-up could not have occurred at a more awkward time, and it meant a hectic, nervous preparation for the European tour. Having said that, the later shows felt particularly joyful and now the debate concerns whether the band actually needs to expand …or not.

Recordings for the next LPD album begin in the Autumn, and there are tentative plans to work with a drummer, a cello player and even a brass band. Whatever happens, the Dots plan a return to USA and Canada next Summer.

Slowly the band is recovering from what seemed to be quite a crisis at the beginning of the year. The disappearance of so much of our back catalogue for 2-3 years indeed put us in trouble (as you are aware, there are many mouths to feed at Chez Dots), but a big thank you to Soleilmoon, SPV Poland and Beta Lactam Ring Records for putting things back together.

“Sing while you may”

ONLINE UPDATE – DECEMBER 1, 2001

CHEMICAL PLAYSCHOOL 11/12/13 + NEW “BEST OF” + TEXTURES OF ILLUMINA DCD

The new CP box set is at the pressing plant, and will be available soon from Soleilmoon/Caciocavallo. Most likely Beta Latcam Ring Recordings will propably do a vinyl edition of the whole thing.

“El Kaleidoscopo Terminale” is the title of a new “best of” CD, soon to be released on mexican label Noise Kontrol Discs. Caciocavallo will do a vinyl edition and distribute the CD version in the US.

The double CD version of “Textures of Illumina” will most likely be out in February/March.

“BRAIN IN THE WIRE”

The compilation CD “Brain in the Wire” includes the exclusive LPD track “Old Sparky”. It was originally given away to subscribers of The Wire. Now it’s released “officially” by Brainwashed Recordings, this time with a second disc of (non-LPD) material from various artists who reside on Brainwashed. A ‘secret’ third disc will contain a few surprises. Read more here.

OFFICIAL LIVE ARCHIVE UPDATE

Five whole new LPD concerts are now available from the LPD Official Live Archive. The shows in question are Amsterdam 1986-01-07, London 1990-05-12, Wuppertal 1991-06-12, Chicago 1993-05-15 and Copenhagen 1995-09-18. It’s free, it’s fun and it’s mp3!

 SINCE THE LAST UPDATE….

Beta Latcam Ring Recordings have released “A Perfect Mystery” on vinyl (with an extra side of unreleased material), and the russian Teargarden compilation “For Those Who Walk With the Gods” has seen the light of day. Soleilmoon has also re-released the classic Legendary Pink Dots album “Island of Jewels” from 1986 and “The Lovers” from 1985. The latter has fully restored artwork, featuring “all five faces”.

STAALPLAAT/OPEN CIRCUIT At the moment Open Circuit is put on ice. It will be re-launched later this year.

NEW RELEASE NEWS:

OLDER NEWS

  • SPV Poland has re-emerged and paid royalties. To the unknowns who contacted Poland , we salute you!!!!
Anyhow, I do get a sense that SPV ARE trying now- so we indeed will go on. At least they had the decency to say sorry (try getting a “sorry” out of PIAS and you’ll understand how much it means to us).
  • Meanwhile “Nemesis” seems set for European release on KODEX in Germany.
  • We’re looking for someone to licence in Greece, Russia, Japan, Israel and Australia. If anyone knows anyone ….then pass it on .
  • First Tear Garden Tour (with Download) planned for Summer, ’99
  • New solo album by EKS (“The Blue Room”) + Phil (“Silver Mandela”) finished, and due in October. “Blue Room” will also be on vinyl with a bonus side.
  • “Lullabies” pic disc box set is the start of getting the albums available on vinyl again. We want to go on with the likes of “9 Lives,…” + “From Here,…” which never appeared in vinyl format.
  • PIAS contract ends in ’99, so Soleilmoon will take over + make everything at least twice as affordable.
  • TENTATIVE plan for an EKS solo tour of South America (Chile, Brazil, Argentina, Columbia). “I’ll believe it when I step off the plane.” – EKS
  • LPD should go to Greece in January + there will be plans for shows in North of Norway, White Russia, Baltic States, as well as the usual places. Advanced plans for a show in London (early ’99).
  • Mimir 3 approaches completion.
  • First OFFICIAL live CD (a double) approaches completion (due out on World Serpent in ’99).

WE’re really trying to build up a directory of sympathetic shops, mail-order services, clubs and labels, radio stations and fanzines to try and overcome this distribution vacuum. Consequently we’d really like people to send information about what is decent in their own parts. In turn, we’ll make this information freely available to bands we know + like, or who write to us – encouraging them to circulate it as well. Maybe the idea is Utopian, but energry usually produces results and it’s time for a pre-millennial underground explosion!

DATE SOUGHT
We´re desperately looking for a show in Germany (anywhere), Belgium (anywhere) or Eastern France (Nancy/metz) for Friday October 1. If anybody has any serious leads, please contact kaspel@euronet.nl.

VISUAL STIMULATION
Fellow Dotter, and cover artist for one of them Triple Moon Tribute tapes, Jared Butler now has available his short film, Underneath ready to send out to folks and friends. The LPDs granted him permission to use some of their songs in his low budget hi-fi filming effort. Filmed in Sweden and San Francisco, it’ll be a neat thing to have once our friend has made the big time! It is on an NTSC-only stereo VHS tape. Sorry, no European machine compatible copies…

MIMIR NEWS…
Mimir did not play the Nevers festival in July this month as planned nor did they do the VPRO radio show. Andreas Heemann sprained his arm and they were unable to perform. Mimir 3 and a possible Mimir 4 are nearing completion and should be due soon.

WEBSITE NEWS…
The Live Connections web page has finally been automated for those looking to trade LPD live cassettes with other LPD friends around the world. Go check it out!

OLDER ISSUES…
Help sought for Scandinavia and Baltic States: LPD are looking to book a string of dates in October/November and are looking for any leads in Sweden, Norway and Finland. If you have any ideas of clubs in Malmo, Stockholm, Jonkoping, Norrkoping, Sundsvall, Uppsala, Umea or Tornio, please email kaspel@euronet.nl.

RELEASE NEWS  Just out are the following….

  • EDWARD KA-SPEL/ Share the Day\Dream Stealer (15 DFL/8 $ US)
2 new tracks on a 7″ vinyl single released by long term LPD friend jon Whitney of the excellent Brainwashed website (www.brainwashed.com).
  • MIMIR/Mimiryad LP (40 DFL/25 US $)
Hyper limited vinyl only, drastically re-worked from original CD.
  • For completists, the old cassette compilation,”Voices in a Dark Room” has been reissued as a CDR by Staalplaat. LPDs, contribution is “MIRROR MESSIAH” recorded live in Cologne in 1983 (the first ever official live show). To be fair, it’s a patchy release… though the pieces from Mekanik Kommando (now known as The Use of Ashes) and Kapotte Musik made these ears dance a little. It’s available directly from us or Staalplaat.
  • Also available is the industrial compilation “Triton”, which features “Sterre” from the “Hallway of the Gods” CD. The only remarkable feature of this release is the ugliness of the cover.

Imminent…

  • Second full length live double CD will be issued by World Serpent in the Summer (“Farewell Milky Way” is the title).
  • New TEAR GARDEN CD planned for release in Autumn.
  • SOLEILMOON reissue of PIAS catalogue slated for the start of 2000.

There is more, but these fingers ache….

VARIOUS RANDOM OLDER NEWS TOPICS…

  • Did you know the correct title of the album should be: “To Be An Angel Blind, The CRIPPLE Soul Divide” and that Edward wanted “The Last Man to Fly” to end with “Last Post” and not include “3-D Technicolour”?
  • The Mimir gig in Nevers France is part of a festival that also includes Autechre, but I really can’t get any further info on it so far. In addition, they should be doing a radio session for VPRO in Holland. And last I heard Babs Santini has finished the cover for the third Mimir album. Oh, one more thing, neither Christoph nor Edward has ever heard of a Greek edition of the first Mimir album as listed in the Dots-o-graphy.
  • No new album for the Dots for a while still, but the live CD is here and Russian CD is coming soon, Edward reports. The US edition of “Tanith and the Lion Tree” has been cancelled as the SPV in Poland have made good on themselves. By the “Phoney War” and “Old Man Trouble” were actually bonus tracks on this album (which was supposed to come out on LP originally) and Ed doesn’t really consider them part of the album.
  • “Four Days”, “Prayer for Aradia” and “Scriptures for Illumina” are all pretty much sold out from them. It’s advised to grab these whereever you can if you don’t have them already. I don’t think they mean to let any of them go out of print, but it wouldn’t be unlikely if it’s a little while before they can press more of any of the three. Dna Le Draw D-Kee as well as “Basilisk”, “Atomic Roses” and “Apparition” are due to be reissued by Soleilmoon someday, though probably not any time in the immediate future.
  • The contract with PIAS ends this year, so hold off the temptation to buy any of those cheap imports which they probably won’t see any money from anyhow. These titles all will be reissued by Soleilmoon Recordings someday (next year?).

ONLINE UPDATE – 10th November, 1999

WINTER APPROACHES

As the last month of the millennium approaches, the LPDs are making plans for 2000. On the agenda right now is a brand new North American widescale tour (no, there’s no confirmation of a Tear Garden set at this time so stop asking). In the meantime, LPDs would like to get psyched by playing some dates to essentially warm up for the show. LPDs are looking to book the last week of January and the first of February for some dates in France, Belgium and possibly Spain. If anybody can help arrange some shows for these dates, please email kaspel@euronet.nl.

In the meanwhile, please be on the lookout for a New Twilight Circus release plus a new Edward Ka-Spel solo album (“Red Letters” ) before the end of year (it´s finished; cover being worked on). Mimir 3 and a possible Mimir 4 are also nearing completion and should be due soon.
