Press Release

“1992 saw The Pink Dots anxious to find a new path. The pain of losing their inspirational guitar player Bob Pistoor to cancer, yet simultaneously enjoying an unexpected taste of success with the album “The Maria Dimension” saw the band plunged into a spin. Resisting the temptation of rushing a new album together and perhaps capitalising on the Maria momentum, The Dots instead decided on a long sojourn in the studio.

Guests were invited – namely former LPD violin player Patrick Q. Wright and old friend Steve Stapleton (Nurse With Wound), while the band also gained a new member in Ryan Moore who was a blistering bass player and a fabulous drummer. He was also bursting with new musical ideas. Ryan was the perfect foil for new guitarist Martijn de Kleer who had the unenviable task of stepping into Bob’s shoes. Marty also played bass and had his own style of drumming. Sessions sometimes lasted for hours over a period of 9 months. Engineer Vincent Hoedt oversaw the first workouts while Ray Steeg took over in the last months.

The result saw 2 albums emerge – “Shadow Weaver” and “Malachai”, and tragically the band’s record company at the time saw no potential in either album. In retrospect, both of these records occupied a place as left as it gets in so-called Alternative Music, but 20 years on they still have something truly fresh about them. Even so, what about the remains of all of those sessions? Much found it’s way on to the double cd “Chemical Playschool 8/9” and “Chemical Playschool 10” yet STILL it felt like the Dots had merely scratched the surface. “Come out From The Shadows” addresses this quandary through the first two volumes. The music presented here is pretty much untouched from the original improvisations in the studio…there has just been an amount of very necessary editing (anyone for 43 minutes of “On the Boards/Swords?”). There is also material from the other Dots album which largely emerged from long studio sessions – “9 Lives To Wonder”. Cevin Key flew in from Los Angeles to be the special guest on that one.”

‘Stitching Time (1st version)’ originally appeared on the Beta-lactam Ring Records ” A Bell is just a Bowl Until it’s Struck” V/A release in 2000.

Notes

A slow trawl through a box of old DAT tapes can be worthwhile. Here are unreleased improvisations from the 90s together with rare versions of snippets from Shadow Weaver/ Malachai. Enjoy…. -E. K-S.

2013 Bandcamp release:
Issued mid January 2013 in a custom made and hand printed 6 panel case as an edition of 500 copies. The ghosts of decades past are blocking the doors but you carry the future in the palm of your left hand. It promises a gentle landing, a transformation in soft colours. Hope. Eternity. Now, for the sake of posterity, one last pose before the ruin…..please.

Reflective and a little melancholy, parts of it could have been made back in ’73, but in another more innocent dimension.  Mostly instrumental, apart from that odd interlude concerning a turkey.

***

A largely instrumental album from EK (although there is a curious tale of missing turkey recited on “Friends of The Earth”), “One Last Pose” is drenched in the artist’s earliest musical memories. There is a distinct flavour of the 70s prevailing throughout the work and instruments used in it’s creation date from decidedly ancient beasts through to an eclectic collection of soft synthesisers. – notes from Bandcamp page

February 2024 expanded release:
Released for February 2024 Bandcamp Friday, One Last Pose Before the Ruin is presented as newly covered up and greatly expanded.  The deluxe offering included the original cd from 2013 plus a CDR of new music created in January of 2024.  This is a limited edition of 86.  The CDR is also available separately under the title The Ruin.  The digital version has the new image as seen above.

The notes from EK’s Bandcamp:
IN THE PRESENCE OF THE LENS
I WILL SUSPEND MY PLAUSIBILITY
AND POUT FOR ALL ETERNITY MISSHAPEN, SAD AND
AWKWARD.YOU
SEE, I CANNOT GET MY MOUTH QUITE RIGHT,
ITʼS LIKE I’M BEING TORTURED..
AND MY MELANCHOLY SOUL HAS JUST BEEN KIDNAPPED THEN DEPORTED…….AHHH
BUT THEYʼLL TAKE AWAY MY BLEMISHES AND GIVE MY HAIR SOME STYLE
TWO BRIGHT BLUE EYES TO LOOK THROUGH AND A MILLION DOLLAR SMILE
A BODY THATʼS BEEN WORKING OUT,
THEYʼLL PAINT OVER ALL THOSE TEARS
AND MY PRECIOUS PLACE UPON THIS EARTH WILL DISAPPEAR……..
LAST, THEY ‘LL STRIP ME OF MY NAME,
THEN THEY’LL BRAND ME WITH A CODE
THATʼS COMPOSED OF ONES AND ZEROES THAT STRETCH ACROSS THE ROAD.
AND I ENVY MY DEAR FOREFATHERS
IN SEPIA AND CHROME;
THE STEADY FADE HAS SERVED YOU WELL ….ALTHOUGH ITʼS SLOW.

Notes from LPD’s Bandcamp:
THE GHOSTS OF DECADES ARE BLOCKING THE DOORS BUT YOU CARRY THE FUTURE IN THE PALM OF YOUR LEFT HAND. IT PROMISES A GENTLE LANDING, A TRANSFORMATION IN SOFT COLOURS. HOPE, ETERNITY.NOW FOR THE SAKE OF POSTERITY, ONE LAST POSE BEFORE THE RUIN …PLEASE

Review

I am sitting with the newest release from mr. Edward Ka-Spel in front of me. This his latest effort is out, on the exciting and interessting label Beta-Lactam Ring Records, all packed up in a truly amazing cover and art work. As always it is very exciting when a new release comes out from Ka-Spel, as he is a true chameleon in music, every time putting out something very special and unique. 5 tracks in the well known Ka-Spel experimental, dark, droney style is what your ears are treated with. This is music that demands, your full attention to get the maximum experience. Sit down in your favourite listening chair, put on your headphones and let yourself be captivated by the music. Admitted, this music is not for everybody, but if you (like this reviewer) likes experiemental, complicated and drone music this will hit spot on. The solo albums are Edward Ka-Spels labatory, a place where he experiements and create excellent sounds out of this world. Edward Ka-Spel really have a sound off his own, that does not sound like anything else. I like most of his earlier releases and this his latest one does not dissapoint either. If you know Ka-Spel and his music you probally allready have this release, if you are a new listener this is a good place to start. Highly recommended !!!  – Complicated Sounds

“Cosmic Space Drone” lives up to its name, travelling into the deepest void, its gaping maw swallowing up meteoric dust and wayward celestial souls alike to fuel its endless journey into the infinite. Your journey will follow two long tracks, the first a fuzzy, electronic spacerock whiplash effect that surges and shudders, wrenching you away from the scorched earth and all that you know.

Once escape velocity is achieved, you will find yourself drifting ever further from home, your only company the thrum and hum of the engines – a soundtrack for a doomed crew.
Is it grim, even frightening? Yes, at times. But it’s your only hope for survival -and you’ll thank us when your friends are nothing but smoldering cinders on a world gone mad.

So don’t delay! Buy your brain a ticket to ride on these tracks of tachyons, but be warned: this is a one way trip into uncharted territories where ancient machines hum and throb to the forgotten rhythms of distant long-dead pulsars. Once the polychrome porter punches your ticket, there is no hope of return – your consciousness will slowly cook in a churning, burning dark matter stew simmering slowly in a cosmic cauldron. Please, sir, may I have some more? -BLRR

Notes

A good recording of a decent show by the Dots shortly before Christmas 2007.

The acoustics of Cafe de la Danse were nigh perfect and the Parisian audience respected the music enough to allow every note to be heard, yet give the band full-on encouragement. A night to remember.

This show was released on CDR by “The Trademark of Quantity” in 2008 and has been carefully remastered for this reissue on Bandcamp. – Edward Ka-Spel

***

(Electro-improv album with Edward Ka-Spel.) Ed. of 300 numbered copies.  Ulkomaalaiset is a rather different kind of Gharbzadegi or Fremd. In this context it speaks to a disconnection to place rather than to people. Fitting a square peg into a round hole CAN, however, be a good thing.

Edward Ka-Spel united with Alena Boikova and Martin Heuser in Finland to herald the coming of Spring and managed to paint several startling tone poems that reflect this sense of Ulkimaalaiset. The trio settings were improvised with an intimacy, conveying both the beauty and loneliness of exploring a strange, unpopulated place. Sometimes Heuser’s piano plays against Ka-Spel’s and Bikova’s electronics with the quiet subtlety and austere sweetness of a more musical John Cage/David Tudor collaboration. Occasionally the spirits (and maybe even the ghosts) of Aho and Sibelius are inadvertently conjured. This triumvirate is so well matched that they seem to create air above mountains.

Two separate releases present with four very distinct pieces of loud, quiet, and loud. Cloudbursts of angelic rain bewitching the souls of the ever wandering Ulkomaalaiset. Easter in rural Finland isn’t exactly the most exciting holiday. Everything is closed, the few people that are normally there seem to vanish and even the mosquitoes maintain a respectful distance. Martin Heuser somehow found himself in Karis (also known as Karjaa for, in Finland, most of the places have 2 names) with nothing to do. He had flown North from his birthplace in South Brazil to avoid military service and claim a spot at the delightful Lärkkulla College – but at Easter 2007 he very much felt like an outsider. The college was virtually empty. Likewise Edward Ka-Spel (an Englishman) and Alena Boikova (a Russian) found themselves at the same place at the same time, anxious to celebrate the coming of Spring but not quite sure how to do it. A casual conversation over a bottle of Chilean wine, procured BEFORE the shops closed, revealed that Martin played classical piano. Ka-Spel, a little excited by this news, declared that the three should make an album. In fact they made two. They will probably make another one at some time in the future. What else a poor foreign boy (or girl) do in Finland? Ulkomaalaiset means “Foreigners” in Finnish. The name was decided upon in a truly democratic way as all found the word to be a beautiful one.

The band would like to thank Stefan at Lärkkulla College for making this all possible, and Chris & Heather at BLRR for allowing the music to be heard by a wider public. Martin Heuser: piano Alena Boikova: Drums, percussion, electronics Edward Ka-Spel: keyboards, electronics, small indescribable objects.

Recorded in Karis, Finland, Spring 2007. Limited to 300 hand-numbered copies.  Packaged in gatefold cardboard cover with hand-numbered insert.

It’s Easter in the small Finnish town of Karis. There’s the delightful, but seasonally empty Larkulla College and a Brazilian (Martin Heuser) ,an Englishman (Edward Ka-Spel) and a Russian (Alena Boykova) all trying to find something worthwhile to do on this auspicious occasion.

It was Alena who suggested a session in the music room. She commanded the drum kit plus a plethora of percussion instruments, EK went for the electronics and classically trained Martin sat at the piano.

This album is a distillation of what came next- in fact the first 2 improvisations, captured by microphones in the room. Later Beta-Lactam Ring records released these sessions on 2 hyper-limited cds. No remastering here, they sound just fine to these ears…. Incidentally, Ulkomaalaiset is Finnish for “foreigners”  -E K-S
