Notes

First volume of a trilogy containing lost or rare EK tracks spanning the last 3 decades. This volume focuses on explorations originally only available on the long out-of-print “Melancholics Anonymous” collection plus vinyl excursions and “Sepia” from a download-only album from Brainwashed. This volume will be available on CDR early in 2017.

2023 CDR release:
Available at legendarypinkdots1.bandcamp.com for some time, it felt appropriate to finally include “An Abandoned Laboratory Part 1” on this page, dedicated to EK solo works. Newly covered up ! The purpose of this release was to largely replace the long out-of-print CD, “Melancholics Anonymous”. Edition of 99.

Notes

This is a release for die-hards only. It’s the sound of Edward Ka-Spel lost in the Zone with synthesisers and effects units back in 1981, later developed a little, but never heard by the wider World in it’s entirety until now. There have been snatches revealed, on “Kleine Krieg” in particular but the full-on Kosmisch Attack was perhaps considered too indulgent for public consumption during the last 30 years.

Even so the session has a history. It was largely created in Conrad Schnitzler’s mighty music room in Berlin. EK stayed with him in 1981, ostensibly to make an interview for a fanzine (which sadly never appeared ) and the great pioneer kindly gave him shelter for almost a week.

One night Conrad had a dinner appointment and invited The Pink Dots’ singer to “do whatever he wanted “ on the synths and echo chambers scattered around the magical space. It was the equivalent of 15 Christmases arriving at once. He indulged himself and recorded the results for posterity. Bless you Conrad…we all miss you!

On the June 2017 cassette release, The Perfect Patch-
Featuring “the Berlin Session” on side 1 and a lost analogue synth extravaganza (on the Yamaha CS30) on side 2 with a delightful cover by Alice.  On 4mg Records label from Slovakia.

Limited to 100 copies. Each copy contains a unique download code on card to get this release digitally.
Cover by Alice.

Liner notes from the sleeve:

SIDE 2 DEVASCAPE A – An Amsterdam Space Jam
From the vault, a slightly edited, enhanced session from EK on the Yamaha CS30 synthesizer from 1986. Hours of this material in fact remains unheard, but this was deemed worthy of a wider audience than the contents of a cupboard.

Notes

Spectrescapes Vol. 1 & Vol. 2 LTD edition- 299 copies.
Includes Spectrescapes Vol 1, originally released as the 2nd CD in the Ghost Logik box set from 2012 (RBL035BOX and RBL035BOX2), comes with a postcard, pendant and old stellar map.

This a concept album where Edward Ka Spel (legendary pink dots) pays homage to long pieces and experimental ambient songs . the sound of Edward takes us out of time in the long trip taking us with her warm voice.

Don’t gaze into Outer Space in search of a new mystery to solve.
Don’t prowl by night trying to catch the figure that walks through the wall.
Don’t examine that photograph for blemishes or try to hear voices in the static.
You are already there in the centre of the mystery.
You are the anomaly, the thing that can’t be explained and you inhabit a space that is teeming with life.
The microscopic, the herculean, solid, transparent, heaving, dissolving…
The door is always open, but it helps if you can see it.
(Edward Ka-Spel)

With Spectrescapes 2 becoming steadily rarer on cd as the days pass, it seemed like the right time to post the web edition – especially as Hallowe’en is just 3 days away as I type.

Lyrics

Mercy me..Sweet nursey please go easy on the opium.
Go tell it in the Odeon, the old dog’s biting back.
We are not talking resurrection.
We are citing cold hard facts.
Remove the tubes.
Dismiss the preacher, strike the sack.
I need a cold one…can’t hurt now….

So gather round ye predators I bring depressing news..
It’s 4am, there are no taxis here ,
I need to be amused.Just pretend you’re happy..
Clap your hands…
If you’re happy and you know it, clap your hands…

Woke up this morning , read the news..
I refuse to take things lying down
