“This CD is a reissue of an extremely limited vinyl release which appeared a few years ago on Holland’s Korm plastics label. The project was instigated by Korm label boss Frans de Waard, who phoned the Legendary Pink dots household with the brief request, “Why don’t you make something for our ambient series?”

It was a challenge, especially as the term “ambient” had become synonymous with any floating landscape which oozed out of a set of speakers at the time. The estimable Brian Eno was of course the man who first coined the term “ambient music” years before to describe records which were meant to be as ignorable as they were enjoyable. We decided to go for the enjoyable angle, as the ignorable option had been overused by many.

A session was organized with myself (Edward Ka-Spel), my then-wife, Elke; our 2 year old son, Calyxx and fellow Pink Dot Ryan Moore. The session lasted 3 days with breaks for eating, sleeping and other functions necessary to ongoing human existence. All of this was at last edited and mixed by myself, and the name “DNA Le Draw D-Kee” was pinned on it because it’s an anagram of Edward and Elke.” EDWARD KA-SPEL 1999

DNA Le Draw D-Kee (an anagram of Edward and Elke) was first released on vinyl by old friend Frans De Waard as part of his Korm Plastics’ Ambient Series. In fact it’s far from being an ambient record with many explosive rhythmic sections (Ryan Moore outstanding on percussion) and noisy interludes that could have been dropped from a plane out of Osaka.
The vinyl was a small edition of just 300 copies, and a cd reissue (on Soleilmoon) was welcome around a decade later as it’s a work that’s often overlooked but definitely has quality.
This remaster adds a bonus cut from an aborted second album .

The other bonus track , “Ja soa Schmarrn” is a story in itself. Released under the moniker of “A Vegetarian Bavarian in Exile”, rarely has the vinyl format been pushed to such an extreme.  There are just 100 copies in existence of this 12″ single with the entire centre part melted and shaped into a mountain with grass and sheep and the spirit of the Heimat represented so lovingly. Each mountain is different. Countless copies were scrapped where the melting process backfired. To finish it off, it was released in a cakebox with Elke Skeltzer (aka The Vegetarian Bavarian), baby Calyxx and Rund um den Watzmann label manager Rene Heid and his partner Kim in full Bayerische regalia on the front.
Elke and EK made the music together, collaged from scratchy Bavarian records found in flea markets, but to acquire the glorious cakebox, it now means a raid on an art gallery.

DNA LE DRAW D KEE (anagram of Elke and Edward Ka-Spel) is a special “ambient” project that features Edward Ka-Spel and Ryan Moore of the Legendary Pink Dots, Edward’s wife at the time Elke and then 2 year old son Calyxx. This disc is a re-issue of a previously limited edition (500) vinyl only release from 1995 on Holland’s Korm Plastic label. The cd contains two lengthy, flowing, instrumental sound collage pieces: “Decay” and “DNA”. “Decay” uses electronic drones, hums, glitches, music box tones, samples of voices and bird calls, synth sounds and some somewhat tribal percussion playing. I especially like the 4 to 5 minute music box section … very beautiful and relaxing. The track ends with a gradually building wall of percussive tappings and bouncy synth notes. “DNA” begins with a minute and a half of soft piano and stereo panned static waves that I wish would go on forever. The percussion-less track evolves with synth waves and more music box tones, keyboard pads, static, baby cries and bizarre synth sounds such as warning signal-like beeps. The final four minutes or so build with bizarre, plucked guitar string type sounds and sweeping synth chords. Both tracks are varied and paced well, changing and moving often enough to avoid becoming boring. I hear bits similar to early LPD, solo Ka-Spel and Mimir and bits reminiscent of Neu! (especially the beginning of “DNA”), Eno, and early Pink Floyd. If you like the more atmospheric side of the Pink Dots and Ka-Spel’s work, you’re going to love this. The artwork for the inserts is a gorgeous swirled collage of psychedelic pastel colors, it’s too bad Soleilmoon didn’t make a poster for this one. Khalamalezh Vidas! – Mark Weddle

Originally released in 1996 on Korm Plastics and long deleted, Dna Le Draw D Kee is an attempt by various members of The Legendary Pink Dots (more specifically Edward Ka-Spel and Elke Skelter – check for anagrammatics) to produce ambient music which went beyond mere background and into the realms of enjoyability. The CD re-release’s vinyl heritage results in two side-long pieces of about twenty minutes each, and the first, “Decay”, is the more introspective. Bearing a passing relationship to some of the pieces on the (originally) ultra-limited Four Days LPD release as well as the individual band members’ own atmospherica, “Decay” trundles and pulses its way through bass cycles and something electronic resembling a steam-press ticking over in a secluded corner, while the Various Ghosts of the credits murmur slight, sinister nothings to themselves. Little chimes, musical boxes and more zoological samples make drifting segues with the occasional urgent moment of sussurus and quietly untoward radio noise, while the emergent percussion takes everything off into more frenetic (though still reclined) rhythmic hypnosis. “DNA” has an appropriately spirally feel, with the keyboards Mellotroning out into those sliding orchestral or glutinously recombinantly liquid synthesizer sounds which signify Ambient taken into the microscopic layers of the dust in the carpet, or whatever sounds fibrous static might produce alongside the dolphinate magnifications of the small-talk of mites, listening in to the sqeaks of young Calyxx. Tracks 1 to 9 represent the album Eyes! China Doll which was recorded and released in 1985. Thanks to Thierry for locating the original master tape, and to Peter for transferring it to DAT.
Tracks 10, 11, 18 are from Perhaps We’ll Only See A Thin Blue Line (1989).
Tracks 12 to 14, 16, 17 and 19 are from Laugh China Doll (1985) and were mastered from clean copies of the original vinyl record. This was necessary because the master tape was destroyed.
Track 15 was released on a cassette compilation entitled “Wuuurgh,” manufactured in a limited edition of 28,000,000 on the Planet EK. None were exported because the cover was deemed to be obscene.

2013 notes from Bandcamp:
“Textures” first appeared as a 10″ vinyl record on the curiously monikered German “Bog” label. It was extended for the “Das Digital Vertrauen” -a double cd compilation on Soleilmoon, then much bonus material was added for this eventual double cd. Basically a collection of experiments and explorations. It appears here slightly sonically enhanced.
The bonus disc (Steven Cow etc.) was a 27 minute excursion attached to the initial pressing, but in fact this collection has never been re-pressed so there are no single disc copies. Disc 2 features re-titled re-workings of “Even Now” and “Suicide Pact” as part of an extended suite. -EK

10″ vinyl:
Included double-sided insert with lyrics and credits, plus the bog story.

2xCD:
Disc A reissues tracks from the 10″ of The Textures of Illumina and the compilations Das Digitale Vertrauen and Globus And Decibel. Track 1-7 is listed only as “Atomic Roses ’95”, and track 1-8 is not listed on the sleeve. The correct track names are listed above for each.

Disc B is a bonus disc, included only with the first 1500 copies. The 6 songs on Disc 2 are indexed as one track (the sixth track is unlisted).  On it is a selection of experiments and re-workings of old songs concocted throughout 2001. Names have been changed in order to protect the innocent. 

2024 remaster digital and CD-R reissue notes:
A ver limited 2 x CD-R edition lovingly created and signed by the artist- edition of 59.

An album that was first released on vinyl as a 10″, then greatly expanded with bonus tracks when it later emerged as a double cd. This is the ultimate version (including those bonus tracks) after an intense sonic overhaul. To complete the rebirth, it has been given a new cover .

Tracks 1 – 3 represent the original 10” album. Tracks 4 – 6 are bonus cuts from compilation albums in the late 90s. Tracks 7 – 12 was a suite of songs/ sketches old and new that formed the bonus disc of the 2 x cd release on Soleilmoon Recordings.

1993. Picture this. It’s a glorious Summer day but EK is inside with only Sabine’s dog, Skoi, to keep him company. An old friend, Sabine, had asked him and Elke to look after her house (and hound) for a week while she went on holiday.

On this sunny afternoon, EK is strumming an out-of-tune acoustic guitar. Skoi seems to object and HOWLS (a lot). The howls are recorded, as the would-be guitarist runs around the room, followed by one small dog.

Then it’s overdub time….Ballbearings are rolled across the wooden floor. Skoi takes a rest.

Then there’s the vocal part…EK seems annoyed by a record company. In retrospect, it’s a little embarassing (said label really wasn’t THAT BAD). However they made it clear that they didn’t like LPDs’ “Shadow Weaver”, and childish as it may seem, criticism goes down very badly with the singer.  Consquently, the lyrics are painfully vitriolic.

“Scriptures” was that kind of album – peculiar, noisy and rather unique but sadly not so well recorded. The Soleilmoon reissue remastered by Raymond put some of this matter to rights, but consider this latest downloadable version to be definitive. -EK

“Serious sonic surgery” was performed on this album and released for April 2024’s Bandcamp Friday.

Around 30 years since this rough, explosive album was released. It has been sonically overhauled, but with plenty of respect!- EK

Killer bees patrolled the border, Mad Dog Caesar rolled the dice, they seized control while we were sleeping, glued pitch black patches on our eyes. If seeing you is loving you, I think I’ll tear out both my eyes. I’m happy on this private island, the only place I have to hide. We huddle close, we’re wearing muzzles, we carry crosses nine to five. And though we roll in black sand blisters, somehow we just stay alive. It’s in their interest but I haven’t figured out the reason why and if I did I’d keep it quiet cos black is white and truth is lies. In this place called Illumina the white light never fades. Speech: Breakfast is served at the monument at precisely 5:05. Not a second earlier, not a second later. A neon light flashes ‘EAT – DON’T TALK.’ It’s blazing above our heads. Just as if we’d never seen it before, if we’d actually needed to be reminded. We don’t want to be reminded. A friend of mine once whispered out, hinting somehow the food seemed better one morning. They took him away, they strapped him to the chair. They put electrodes in his head and they illuminated him and his eyes would turn into bright bright candle like messages that flashed and flashed, “I talked, I did not eat. I am a reminder.” I am a constant reminder of how you should behave. I am a constant reminder of the priviliges of being obedient at all times. We must fade out, out.

Memoires Of Dr. Bliss

We called it Operation Friendly because the victims were restricted. Nothing got beyond the fence, the gifted were extracted. For the greater good we kept it classified. We filed survivors under S, ran some tests, I served the finest medication. I watched them laugh themselves to death. It makes a tidy end. We called them Holy Mercy candies cause it’s Christ who buys the wine. He slowly runs his finger down the perforated spine. He takes the time to listen carefully. Your pain drifts away, your pain drifts away. I should know it was me who ran the tests, watched you laugh yourself to death. It makes a tidy end. The jury all wore clothes-pins, the judge was unimpressed. There simply was no punishment devised to suit the hellish inner squirms of the one called Dr. Bliss. So they locked him in his playpen where he’s busy playing chess with Napoleon. I stand here unimpressed. But I shall laugh myself to death cause it makes a tidy end. It makes a tidy end.

A Grain Of Salt

All the world’s a stage – you failed the first audition. Doomed to walk the wings beyond my vision. Send in the hand. I tried to understand. I tried to find the man behind the mouse, the sleeping lion just was not there. I screamed, I shook you, I shot you twice, you apologized. That’s why Jack’s a dull boy.

Jenny danced with Joey on the table when the jukebox played their tune. He’d kiss her navel, she’d swoon like Isadora. Hit the floor. The special room would saw clean through the gates of old Gomorrha. Oh, they never saw us watching, clapping, gnawing, snapping, clawing through the jungle, twisted arms and knotted legs. And that for every secret wish you slept with. Down in Lazy Lover’s Leap I took a seat inside a cubicle. I peeked at you, watched movies starring meecey films of you. The thrusted Brits on a pole, and all the bodies I’ve lusted for line up. I’m transparent. No one sees the hunger in my eyes. No, no one sees the hunger in my eyes. The Never Man

I bleeded for my purple card, I didn’t have a stamp so I pleaded for my stamp, I didn’t have a card. And everywhere I traveled faces turned and turned away. Yes I cleared the shopping malls, I watched them slowly climb the walls dive head first in the river, one by one. I’m the never man, the man without a face without a number. I strolled into the movies, turned a camera on myself. I screened my never profile coast to coast. I fantasized the countdown and a melt down. {14, 13, 12, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, 0} Now I’m walking through the ghosts but no they don’t see me. They don’t see each other. They’re the never men and no they don’t see me. (Never never never man.) They don’t see each other. (The never man.) I’m the never man, the man without a face without a number. No one knows the number that sits proudly on the front of heaven’s door. The never man. Run away, run away. Never meant to be. Run!

There Was A Crooked Man

Play it, play it then behave. Oh yessiree, we have the chains. Now here’s the instructions: Thou shalt rave, Thou shalt give us more Marias. For our lady, she is fertile. Our lady, she sells, and we can smell that pot of silver. It is waiting maybe you can have some here, here. But play it, play it one more time again, again, again, again. A thousand times come out from that shadow boys. It’s kind of hard to hear you through that god awful fucking noise. They have trouble selling accidents like this. Oh play it, play it, play it one more time, one more time. I wish they all were virgins, oh they’ve been screwing us for years. They wish that they were virgins, screwing us for years. Killer bees besieged the border, evil warders rolled the bees. The eyes of wise guys, slick reporters now hanging from the Judas tree. The TV screen is scrambled and the radio’s jammed but I dutifully follow orders cause you never can, you never can. Who slinks through the cracks across my wall, who listens for my footsteps as night falls, who amplifies the sighs, the curses, fantasizes all the worst things. And I’d rather be a gray man than the great pretender shouting at the moon. Ah, the moon. They switch it off at night because it isn’t square. An anthology release of rarities, compilation appearances, and unreleased material.
Several of the previously released tracks (such as “Andromeda Suite“, “Burned At The Steakhouse“, and “Where No Man“) were slightly remixed for this release.

Little Oyster, I Dream Of Jeannie, She Gave Me An Apple, Stirred But Not Shaken and Where No Man were on the 3″ bonus CD that came with the first 3000 copies of European CD edition of The Maria Dimension.

Tracks released on Bandcamp are sometimes combined to preserve the cross-fades.

From Bandcamp:
1995.  A dark room and a shelf full of bulky 8-track tapes. The boxes would sometimes proudly boast the title of an album like say “Crushed Velvet Apocalypse” in bold felt tip pen, but look closer and there would be a weedy biro line through it and the word “session” replacing it.  Play the thing and it would be a big mix of the individual tracks for the proclaimed album, a weird and wonderful jam and some events that were better left unheard. Such were the building blocks of Cp 8 and 9.

Add to that the odd tracks from compilations, the songs from that elusive 3″ cd that came with initial copies of “Maria Dimension”, cassettes which left blew oxide flakes to the four winds and it can be seen that a serious journey could be taken here.
Lost bits of Shadow weaver, remnants of Maria sessions, scraps from 9 Lives are all here.  Damn it, thee’s also “A Triple Moon salute”, which (along with “Damien”) may be EK’s personal LPD favourite.

Lastly there’s the cover…..weird weird fishes EVERYWHERE -one of Elke’s finest creations…

The Artificial Silence

Just a cry or a whisper in the artificial silence could have helped us to find our island and build a home made just for two. But your pride and my resistance and the strong advice of those who wish us well maintained the distance – and I doubt I’ll ever see you again. Yet I wonder if you wrote me…? I wonder if I called…? Would we hide behind the wall that divides us and protects us from all that fall back into violence. Can we crack this silence?

A Chrome Zone in Powder Park

Down below the apple tree, washed out by the blood flood, head – down in the daisy patch… it was still – born in the mud. Three tiny hands were stretching, longing for a breast – but it wasn’t there. Eight baby lips were puckered, antennae in the air. Nothing there! Mummy took her lover by his green and purple claw, quite resigned. “Let’s try once more. A second time! Let’s try once more…” (practice makes perfect, don’t you know…)

Will you shower me with red ones, green ones and yellow ones? Is the answer in a spike, or with a rusty knife or in that place they call “heaven”? Ah… there’s no need to send me flowers for I have gardens where I go walking with my wife. Though I haven’t met her yet, I know she’s coming because she sends me messages… lots of messages. It’s along way to Andromeda but we’ll marry in the spring.

First we’ll make a dollar, gonna take ‘em for a ride before we burn you at the steakhouse and pretend it’s suicide.  It’s not that we don’t like you, you’re an OK kind of guy.  But then, who needs a perfect planet anyhow?

Ahmed liked a tigress in the bed and a kitten in the kitchen except at Ramadan. He takes a stick and beat her ’round the legs, tear the diamond from her navel, dress her in the blackest rags, send her weeping to the shed ’til the feelings got too strong. He was longing for her feel again – the fleshy mountains, just enough to hide behind, melt himself away from the flying bullets, from the crying sirens, the battered Chevrolets on every street. On every corner, insipid sweetmeats, meets the sweetest girls in cafes but the coffee’s bitter, cigarettes are vile. Smiles are poison dipped, the flakes of lamb between the teeth now yellow brown. Sun-baked like the pusher in the corner who waits and waits to take his money, spends it, tells a tale – another Yankee in the jail, another movie, one more headline.

Head is lying in the water and the eyes are dead. Blood drained away now flowing in the veins of a pimp who parades a mile of flesh. She Gave Me An Apple

Jesus walked the earth again. He stretched his hand to kill our pain. The spring winds blew… the acid rained. Love rained for fifteen hours. Generals gazed from Lover’s Leap then took a step for earthly peace – just flew to pieces, literally… Of course, we brought them flowers. But nothing stops the great machine, the wheel spins round, the tannoy screams “Get back in borders! Orders! Orders! Redefine your lines!” And Satan walked the earth again, brought plagues of locusts, whips and chains… Played Guns ‘n’ Roses, blocked the drains but no one payed attention. Too busy in their quiet dream, playing possum drinking tea. The world concluded happily. So there.

You were laughing… Total Recall. I saw doors with no keys. Black Debts. My heart leapt and I caught it in my teeth. I tried to catch a little air; I tried to say a little prayer but He was laughing… Tossed by the wind of relief and regret, I’d turn right, twist left. I was caught up in a net. And the angel whispered “Hi!” I was lifted into the sky – still breathing…

Where No Man

From our window on the vast beyond, we measure space and sing the songs that lost their meaning long before they built this cage we live in. It’s from another age. An aeon… Turn another page, experience another place… here’s a neon palace brimming with temptation. But I’m bored with Mother earth, it’s seven wonders and I wonder, “Was it quite so small?” Did we escape or are we tourists heading for some foreign flawless place that only graced the thoughts of mad professors laughing in their graves? We’ll never know the answer. We’ll never find the tapes. our Bible preaches, “Search! Research! Reshape! Recycle…” Recycle for the sake of those who come before and those who follow. We have orders from beyond, we’ve no alternative; we’re growing weaker as the years go on and on. Our mighty leader is our father and our brother and he’s sick as the in-breaders in the Dead Man’s Room who bang their plates and eat their spoons and scream profuse profanities. I wonder sometimes, “Is it them or is it me who has lost all sanity?” But, after all I hold the key – but keep it safe inside the jar. Now half of this cage is starving while the rest of us shoot stars and blast the eighteen headed Pacman from our armchairs in the bar. Zsa Zsa Korova scored a supernova! Zeros wall to wall in roses, pink, vermillion. A trillion. Five stars. A new religion. Light the candles because I re-wrote the book of Psalms. On silent nights we chant them crawling backwards and watch our world collapse in crackerjacks through cataracts. A cataclysmic, ectoplasmic burst of happy gas. We knock it back. Relax, because we’re never ever going back. We never ever can return…..
