CDR in card cover with home-made artwork.  LPD’s first self-made bootleg

First release on Pink Dots’ own “Trademark of Quantity” label .In fact a self-made bootleg.  Quality is variable but the atmosphere can catch the listener.

Possibly, something for the completist. The concert is from 1992.  -E. K-S.

Notes

Recorded in 5 intense days as November turned into December and as fresh as a brisk desert wind that fries all who stand in it’s path. Close to an hour of songs, scapes  and colours so loud your neighbours will need guide dogs.  Spontaneity can be a wonderful thing in these oh so cautious times.  EK-S

LP version
Freshly edited and mastered for vinyl, “Taos Hum” is being released by the Brudenia label from Kaliningrad, Russia in late Spring. The new Taos Hum cover is another splendid work by fractal artist Anita Hammer, who also created the C.P 16 & 18 cover, and more recently the slipcase images for the Maria Box. The LP is being released by our dear friends at Brudenia. Premonition 40 and The Piper have been re-worked to fit the LP format. Limited edition of 350 copies pressed on 180 gram vinyl, with printed insert.

Notes

Material from 1992

A glimpse into how the Shadow Weaver and Malachai albums came into existence with this collection of raw, searching sessions where Patrick Q. was a guest on violin together with a mystery percussionist who took everyone’s breath away.

Sound enhancement is there but very subtle in order to give the listener the feeling that he or she is right in the room with the musicians.

Quiet pleasures are here, my friends.
Enjoy!  -E. K-S.

2019 re-release:

Press Release

“1992 saw The Pink Dots anxious to find a new path. The pain of losing their inspirational guitar player Bob Pistoor to cancer, yet simultaneously enjoying an unexpected taste of success with the album “The Maria Dimension” saw the band plunged into a spin. Resisting the temptation of rushing a new album together and perhaps capitalising on the Maria momentum, The Dots instead decided on a long sojourn in the studio.

Guests were invited – namely former LPD violin player Patrick Q. Wright and old friend Steve Stapleton (Nurse With Wound), while the band also gained a new member in Ryan Moore who was a blistering bass player and a fabulous drummer. He was also bursting with new musical ideas. Ryan was the perfect foil for new guitarist Martijn de Kleer who had the unenviable task of stepping into Bob’s shoes. Marty also played bass and had his own style of drumming. Sessions sometimes lasted for hours over a period of 9 months. Engineer Vincent Hoedt oversaw the first workouts while Ray Steeg took over in the last months.

The result saw 2 albums emerge – “Shadow Weaver” and “Malachai”, and tragically the band’s record company at the time saw no potential in either album. In retrospect, both of these records occupied a place as left as it gets in so-called Alternative Music, but 20 years on they still have something truly fresh about them. Even so, what about the remains of all of those sessions? Much found it’s way on to the double cd “Chemical Playschool 8/9” and “Chemical Playschool 10” yet STILL it felt like the Dots had merely scratched the surface. “Come out From The Shadows” addresses this quandary through the first two volumes. The music presented here is pretty much untouched from the original improvisations in the studio…there has just been an amount of very necessary editing (anyone for 43 minutes of “On the Boards/Swords?”). There is also material from the other Dots album which largely emerged from long studio sessions – “9 Lives To Wonder”. Cevin Key flew in from Los Angeles to be the special guest on that one.”

‘Stitching Time (1st version)’ originally appeared on the Beta-lactam Ring Records ” A Bell is just a Bowl Until it’s Struck” V/A release in 2000.

Notes

A slow trawl through a box of old DAT tapes can be worthwhile. Here are unreleased improvisations from the 90s together with rare versions of snippets from Shadow Weaver/ Malachai. Enjoy…. -E. K-S.

Notes

A good recording of a decent show by the Dots shortly before Christmas 2007.

The acoustics of Cafe de la Danse were nigh perfect and the Parisian audience respected the music enough to allow every note to be heard, yet give the band full-on encouragement. A night to remember.

This show was released on CDR by “The Trademark of Quantity” in 2008 and has been carefully remastered for this reissue on Bandcamp. – Edward Ka-Spel

Notes

A rough cassette that lurked, waiting to be played, in an Ikea basket for a couple of decades, this is the promised “Live’89 Part 2”. Sadly it isn’t the whole show (from the Bikini Club in Toulouse, France), and quality is shaky, especially with those drop-outs here and there, not forgetting a dose of flu for the singer- but enhancement has also brought it to life.

It’s important as it’s one of the first shows with Bob Pistoor and reflects just how the Dots transformed during that special year. A document, and some rare live songs too (just a pity the first part of “Waiting for the Cloud” is missing). -Edward Ka-Spel
