Notes

Although The Pink Dots originally hailed from the UK, they have played there rarely. Beyond a regular London show, they once played a reggae club in Reading together with Attrition in front of 10 bemused people, a (rather wonderful) home-made festival in Brentwood (with Konstruktivits), an appearance in Northampton, a recent visit to Newcastle…..and this manifestation in the lovely town of Brighton back in 2003.

Memories flood back of the 5 of us crammed in a small dormitory which cost more than what we were actually paid (a princely 50 pounds), a really kind audience who listened and raised us from the confines of a nervous beginning, and a superb time walking the streets of the seaside town the next day. This is a desk recording of that show given to me by long term friend of the Pink Dots, Richard Fontenoy.  It could well be my personal favourite of all live shows posted so far. EK

Sound has been a little enhanced.

More shows from our live archive will be posted throughout this year…We’re checking them for quality whenever time allows…

Notes

The 2010 Tour of North America was never going to be easy. The shock departure of half the band,  just a year before, transformed the Dots into an altogether more fragile yet edgier combo, especially with Erik Drost rejoining on guitar.  It was also the first tour in America following the economic crisis of 2008.  Some clubs en route were depressingly empty, mainly in the Midwest.  Even so, although there were some much bigger shows in the schedule, The Rumba Cafe in Columbus, Ohio felt like the best night of all.  What a wonderful warm audience, what a charming friendly venue… As intimate as it gets… Thanks to Justin Baldonieri for his recording, and to our old friend Carl Howard who played such a big part in making the night so special.  It has the hallmark of an audience recording but sound has been a little enhanced.

Klang Galerie version
The Legendary Pink Dots are an Anglo-Dutch experimental rock band formed in London in August 1980. In 1984 the band moved to Amsterdam, playing with rotating musicians and having, as core members, singer/songwriter/keyboardist Edward Ka-Spel and keyboardist Phil Knight aka The Silverman. The band was originally called “One Day…” but subsequently changed the name to The Legendary Pink Dots, apparently inspired by pink dots on certain keys of the band’s main recording studio piano. In the 1980s the band released albums on Mirrodot and In Phaze; in 1985 they signed with Play It Again Sam for the release of The Lovers. Their music touches on elements of neo-psychedelia, ambient music, electronic music, tape music, industrial, psychedelic folk, synthpop, post-punk, progressive, jazz, noise, pop, and goth rock, with a distinctly experimental/avant-garde bent; their sound has evolved over time and remains distinctive, making it difficult to place the group into a concise style or genre. The group’s overall sound combined with Ka-Spel’s distinct lyrics and singing have earned comparisons to Pink Floyd and Syd Barrett; the group also has links to the sounds of krautrock bands such as Can, Faust, Brainticket, Magma or Neu! The first cassette “Only Dreaming” was an edition of 9 copies, two of which had beautiful three-dimensional handmade covers. “Only Dreaming” was abandoned rather than deleted as the recorded output by The Dots expanded massively within months of the band’s inception. This increased activity led to the beautifully packaged “Chemical Playschool Volumes 1 & 2.” 32 copies were made of this, and the hugely supportive Eurock magazine & mail-order service bought 30 of them in an exchange deal for exotic goodies in their catalogue. It wasn’t meant to end there but the 2 track masters for CP 1 & 2 were largely erased by accident – and “Kleine Krieg” represents the music that survived plus a lot of fresh material that just had to be unleashed on an unwary planet in the month or so following the double tape release. This edition has all tracks of both editions/versions of “Kleine Krieg”, plus a couple of bonus tracks, and is the first time this is being released on double CD. It is a brand new and much better re-master than what was used on the CDR edition some time ago. Full tracklist: 1. Defeated/Deflated/Black Highway 2. Soma Bath/Peace Krime 2/Break Day/The Palace Of Love/Stoned Obituary/Starch On Sunday 3. Vigil 4. Legacy/One For The Pearl Moon 5. Dolls’ House/Brill 6. Down From The Country/Thursday Night Fever/Die With Your Eyes On 7. Closet Kings (First Version) 8. Opus Dei. Price; € 22,-/copy incl. worldwide shipping.

Notes

A flawed but committed performance from The Legendary Pink Dots in late 1996. It was one of the first ever shows for guitarist Edwin Van Wanrooij and engineer Frank Verschuuren.
Venue was the appropriately named Waschhaus in Potsdam, Germany. A friendly club but with the acoustics you would associate with a long bath house. It’s of interest as it was one of the few shows where LPDs tried the “Continuous Flow” experiment. Ryan opened with his Twilight Circus project, which cross-faded into The Silverman’s set, followed by the Dots. A long night in a long club. Alas “Andromeda is slightly abridged while “A Velvet Resurrection” had to be omitted due to a change of tapes…There has been a little post production applied, but there are moments when the room itself wanted to join in (loudly).

Notes

Are you tired of that awkward Paul McCartney song that feels like someone repeatedly jabbing you with a pin while ordering you to have a wonderful Christmas Time? Afraid of Live Aid? Slade? Deceased British comedians that twitch, and shout “Thwaaaay!” (whatever that means)? Well, here is the antidote to that…. the Christmas song that you’ll probably hear just once. If it’s loud enough, the local vigilantes will surely torch your computer and insist you are a heretic.  Welcome, my friends, to The Legendary Pink Dots’ Christmas Special 2015.
You have been warned.

This release was available for a limited time between December 23rd, 2015 and January 10th, 2016
